Christians: How do you feel about this persons ability to 'Debate' religion?

Do you feel that their argument is valid, or perhaps a little weak?
How does it make you feel about your religion in general?
8 AntwortenReligion & Spiritualityvor 9 JahrenSetting up new business while employed?
Situation:
A friend, whilst employed, created a competing company in 2009 and remained working for his employer until Feb 2012.
I have helped him with this project since July 2010 (off the record): delivering flyers, cold calling, etc; trying to attract interest in the new business. At no point did i interact with any party connected with his ex-employer.
After leaving his employer, adverts were placed in the local papers for two weeks and a number of his employers customers are beginning to come over to the new business. They are making complains about his ex-employers service since he left and are saying they generally feel he can protect their interests better.
He did not sign a contract with his ex-employer, so no restrictive covenants are in place.
His ex-employer has issued a letter asking him to stop taking their customers, also they accuse him of stealing their data and trading whilst employed.
From what research I've done:
1. I don't think his ex-employer can ask him to turn down business on the basis that he would be taking their customers. Fair trading states the customers are entitled to source a service from where ever they choose.
2. Stealing data only applies to trade secrets and customer contact details do not apply. My friend had a relationship with all the parties that have come across, some from before he worked for his now ex-employer and they all post their businesses online. The data is readily available to anyone.
3. Trading whilst employed by his ex-employer. I'm not certain what the implications of this are; whether they have any legal stand point against the new business using this argument.
Any advice on the legal ramifications of this situation would be greatly appreciated. If you could correct any misapprehension I may be under or expand on any of it, it'd be great.
Thanks very much...
3 AntwortenSmall Businessvor 9 JahrenGetting a new iPhone 4S, storage space - 16GB or 32GB?
I am considering getting an iPhone 4S in the near future; the tariffs look good but as I've never used a device like this I'm not sure whether the 16GB will be adequate. As I'll go for a 24 month contract I want to make the right choice.
I'll not use it for movies or music, social internet sites or games. I'll mostly use it for phone and txt (obviously) but would also setup POP3 Email for two accounts (if possible) and perhaps work related internet use, but very little.
Would 16GB be suitable for a device with that kind of usage?
Thanks in advance...

2 AntwortenSnooker & Poolvor 10 JahrenIs it cruel and egotistical for a person to teach religion to Children as fact?
As we all know there are and have been many religions, this means that it's statistically unlikely any of them are correct.
Is it therefore cruel to tell children horrible stories about a religion they are expected to believe? Is it egotistical to tell a child that your opinion is as good as fact?
As was once said, one person 'knows' no more about God than any other person. You may have read a religious text and be able to recite more of that particular religion, but as for 'knowing' Gods mind, that is something Nobody can possibly know. Is it egotistical to claim you do?
22 AntwortenReligion & Spiritualityvor 10 JahrenWhat is the Atheist Book of Pages?
Someone keeps on posting question about a book called 'The Atheist Book of Pages'.
I've looked for this but can't seem to find out what it is, can anyone help me out?
I've got a feeling it's just one of those things someone of a more limited capacity for logical, dispassionate argument has invented with the intention of creating unrest among a specific group. But if I'm wrong, I'd love to see what this book is, sounds like a right laugh...
Thanks everyone...
7 AntwortenReligion & Spiritualityvor 10 JahrenWhy would God say that we are vile?
Lots of Christians (and Muslims) say that according to God we are vile sinners, all of us.
If the story of God and Satan is true, it seems more likely that the Bible would have been written by Satan, as it keeps saying how unworthy man is and how he's nothing without 'God'.
If God is love and Satan is Evil, which one demands worship and obedience and constantly reinforces the message that mankind is unworthy?
13 AntwortenReligion & Spiritualityvor 10 JahrenHas prayer ever actually accomplished anything?
We can see the results of action: intervention to stop a civil war from wiping out the civilian population of a country, Research that produces medical advancement or enrolling in a training course to develope your skill set and then getting a better job.
But has prayer ever done anything practical?
14 AntwortenReligion & Spiritualityvor 10 JahrenIs 'Faith' a childish position?
Faith is the secure belief in God and a trusting acceptance of God's will that does not rest logical proof or material evidence.
I've seen the religious people say over and over "The Bible's true because it is the word of God", this is an act of faith, I get that. Problem I have with this statement is that it's a catch 22, it's a trick...
Bible claims to be the word of God and your faith would never let logic or evidence convince you that it isn't because it says it is.
That in effect is saying "The Bible's true because it says it is". Which reminds me of children saying things like "You smell because you do", "You're a twit because you are".
All comments welcome...
Thanks
6 AntwortenReligion & Spiritualityvor 10 JahrenThe Burden of Proof, not for its existence; for your religious claims.?
This one keeps getting flown back and forth, "Prove God exists" - Response "Prove God doesn't exist" and vice versa. I'm not going to try and argue its existence, rather your knowledge of it; your faith in your religion (what ever religion you are).
The burden of proof tends to lie with anyone who is arguing against received wisdom; he who does not carry the burden of proof carries the benefit of assumption, so let’s say for arguments sake, that the religious crowd has the assumption and the atheists have to shift the accepted conclusion.
Beyond reasonable doubt, which is the highest standard used as the burden of proof is, in negative terms, "a proof having been met if there is no plausible reason to believe otherwise." So as long as there is plausible reason to believe that your religion is wrong, the burden is on you to prove it's right.
If there was no “doubt based upon reason and common sense after careful and impartial consideration of all the evidence, or lack of evidence” that your particular religion was correct we would all be that religion, so there must be ‘reasonable doubt’. Hence the burden of proof is on you.
If that is true (your opinion please) then the Atheist now has the benefit of assumption, and the assumption is that your religious beliefs are untrue.
So if you can’t prove that your religion (Christianity, Islam, Mormon, etc) is true; that all the claims it makes are real and the teachings God has given you are divine; if you can't prove that, does that then mean in all probability it’s wrong?
13 AntwortenReligion & Spiritualityvor 10 JahrenHumans change over time, what does that mean?
It's been reported that a study of societies which live in areas of the world that receive less average light revealed they had developed larger eyeballs to compensate. This would suggest that over the generations their children had adapted to the environment and their bodies had changed slightly to provide them an advantage over their living condition.
Does this suggest that humans are susceptible to involuntary physical change based on how their bodies react to their environments?
Does this support the theory of Evolution as fact, or is there some other suggestion for reason of this?
13 AntwortenReligion & Spiritualityvor 10 JahrenWhy would Yahoo post a question on the news board?
Yahoo posted a question from a Yahoo Answers user about what happened before the big bang.
Why do you think that a non-bias group would advertise such a controversial issue?
The lowest rated answers were from the religious section, claiming God did it; and the highest that it's unknowable.
I find it interesting that such a topic would be advertised as news and believe that there is a reason behind this. I won't say what i think is the reason but would be interested to hear what you think it is?
2 AntwortenReligion & Spiritualityvor 10 JahrenBecoming a UK Police Crime Scene Investigator (Detective)?
A new friend of mine has just professed an interest in police detective work. I did ask my friend in the force how you go about joining but couldn't get any really good 'new career' advice.
I've had a look on the web and found a job description of a 'Detective Constable' but still can't find any advice on how you go about starting the journey of becoming one.
My friend is college educated, (I can't remember what in) book smart and can be quite sharp when she wants to be but has been working in Tesco's for the better part of five years; the area we live in has a high unemployment level and I think she's just been content to have any job rather that work towards what she wants.
Any advice you could give me that i can pass on would be greatly appreciated. I would like to give her every opportunity to at least try for this.
Thanks
4 AntwortenLaw Enforcement & Policevor 10 JahrenWhy do they always delete the interesting questions?
The ones where people from both side of the fence ask questions about opinion, like "What would you do if God said this". From an agnostic point of view that question could be fascinating.
Why keep asking the same questions "Do you believe the Bible", "Prove that God exists". These don't stimulate interesting answers; just the same old denial due to lack of empirical evidence one one side and quotation and faith on the other.
With regards to the universe, isn't the question more interesting than the answer?
6 AntwortenReligion & Spiritualityvor 10 JahrenOne for Agnostics, one for the imagination.?
Given that we can't know how or what 'God' is, any idea could be right (but most likely wrong).
I was hoping you could give me one of your ideas on who or what 'God' might be and why it created what we know as reality. Or something like the one that says our galaxy is just a single atom inside another reality.
Anything goes, I'd love to hear some other ideas.
Thanks
