I'm 14, live in Europe but have an Austrian-Canadian citizenship, I speak four languages, two of them fluently, and I'm thinking about possibly studying forensics or criminal justice or medecine, something like that. Music is my obsessoin, I write my own music, I play the guitar and the piano and I sing. It's perfect therapy. I love music, rock, art and life!

  • How do I find the point where the direction of the particle changes? In desperate need of help.?

From what I have set up so far:

For 0<x<6, a particle is moving along the x-axis with the velocity v(t)=2sin(e^(t/4)+1 and a(t)=1/2e^(t/4)cos(e^t/4). (I worked these out, but they are definitely right.)

    From that follows that s(t)=2cos(e^(t/4) * e(t/4)/4 +t

The average velocity between (0,6) was asked. I used the velocity formula and then inserted for

(f(b)-f(a))/(b-a) and received the right solution, which is 0.0202292. No units are given.

Now for the ones I'm not sure about.

Next was asked how far is the distance travelled in the time interval. I just integrated v(t) (which is how I got s(t)), for the interval (0,6) and received the amount 1.73409.

For the one I am stumped on:

The particle changes direction exactly once within the time interval. I assumed this would just be at v(t)=0, and even plotted the graph. According to the graph, it should occur at or around t=5.2

My calculations, on the other hand, go as follows:

    0= 2sin(e^(t/4))+1

    -0.5=sin(e^(t/4)

    asin(-0.5) =-30 =e(t/4)

which does not make sense because for no value of t will e ever be negative because it will only become smaller approacing 0.

Next I tried findign positions on the unit circle for which it could work with. So far no luck, and I have a feeling I am overcomplicating things. Please have mercy on my soul an help me out? :D

  • What degrees involving science could lead to a job in international aid and development?

    Thanks in advance guys.

I am in the process of choosing a degree path, and I have just recently been accepted to medical school in my home country. However, I am not completely sure it is what I want to do. I love the field, but I cannot see myself staying in the same place for very long. I moved quite a bit as a child, and I need to travel or I get antsy.

Anyways, I figure my best bet to truly enjoy my career is to make my passion my job - that is, I greatly enjoy travelling and being in challnging situations, experiencing foreign cultures and meeting new people. Ideally, I aspire to work for an organization or a private entreprise in the Middle East or North Africa in the area of security and development. That is, of course, years away in the future, but I am steadily gaining experience through volunteering and other work related experience.

While I definitely want to do something science related, I do not want to be in a lab. I love medicine, but I want to see the world and work in conflict areas. I could see myself as a liaison worker in the business field, or even as an environmental engineer. I am lucky enough to have a broad choice of programs, but that isn't making my decision any easier.

This brings me to my question: Which degrees offer great advancement potential, international demand and (I'm being honest) good pay in the field of science (particularly health, biology and toxicology or environmental engineering) that are still adventurous, exciting and people-oriented? I want to work for the UN, but that is every aid workers dream.

    Any advice is appreciated!

  • How do I simplify this expression?

    Hey and thanks in advance,

I'm working on an optimization problem, and I've been studying for hours so my mind is slowly turning to mush. For whatever reason, I cannot figure out why this expression:

    x² ((5-x²)/2x))

    is simplified to this:

    1/2(5x-x³)

I have a feeling I am missing something incredibly simple yet important, and I probably already know it but it's not registering and I am getting frustrated. Either way when I I attempt to simplify, the exponents do not add up and I need a simpler expression to be able to differentiate for the first and second derivative. GAAAAAHHHH

Rant over. But a million thanks to whoever helps me out!

  • Does this sound like ovarian cysts, or something else? I am at a loss!?

    Hey there,

In November 2011, I had a 10lbs ovarian cyst removed. I was 17 at the time. The symptoms which I had been having (shortness of breath, majorly distended stomach as if I was pregnant, firm abdomen, kdiney issues, etc.) subsided after that, including losing about 20 lbs in total from the water retention letting up from the cyst. I had some major side effects from the surgery, including irregular cycles, some hair loss, hormonal fluctuations, depression and postsurgical fatigue and exhaustion, which then led tu burn-out as I was not only doing my final exams, but also working as a paramedic and as head of the student council. Alas, not a very happy time for being ill.

However, I felt like I had gotten over the brunt of it about a year after the surgery. I felt better, was stronger and was finally at the mental and physical capacity I was before. About four months ago, I started noticing some changes for the worse, and I am worried due to what happened the last time I wasn't feeling well. I am lethargic, lightheaded nearly all the time, I would have acne if I wasn't treating it with some heavy duty acne medication, I have migraines (while I have had them since i was two years old, there has been significant change for the worse in the past few months. Not in their frequency, but in their severity. I have a high pain tolerance, but two of them in the last little while have left me a crying mess in bed for two days. It was not pretty).

I have been gaining weight and losing all my muscle tone, partly because I am too tired to keep up my usual routine (I have cut down from running my usual 30 min 3-4 times a week and extra strength training). I am getting seriously frustrated because while other people my age (I am turning 19 in two months) are out partying or going to college, I am too exhausted to even think about it. I occasionally have severe pain in my abdomen, sometimes just in the lower corners on one side, at others spanning from my lower back to my ribcage. One time, I was in the bus on my way home after walking a lot during the day (when I tend to get bloated and my abdomen starts to hurt) and the pain came in waves so strong I could not stand up and get off at my stop. This only happens very rarely, but I am seriously worried because none of my doctors seem to think there is anything wrong! I have an appointment with my gyno next week, but I am at a loss. I eat very clean, as I am a vegetarian and try to cut down on any processed foods. I estimate I take in about 1500 calories a day. I have steadily gained about 12 lbs over the last few months for absolutely no reason (which was also while i was working out). This was not muscle mass, but body fat which I measured at the gym. I am taking in adequate nutrients, so i really donät know what's wrong with me. Any help would be VERY much appreciated. Sorry for the rant, but I am desperate for answers.

  • Is this correct latin? (Tattoo)?

    Hey guys,

It's been a while since I have taken latin and I've been meaning to get this tattooed on my back, so I figured I would check. There are a few different versions of how to say this, but I was just hoping that my grammar is somewhat correct.

    The tattoo will be

    PRIMA FACIE MEA CULPA

(meaning, at first sight, I am guilty/it is my fault). As I said, it has been years since I have taken latin, and I might actually check with a teacher at my old school, but i figured I would try to avoid making a fool of myself by asking here first.

    Does it make sense?

  • How to write a letter for special consideration in application?

    Dear All,

I am applying to the University of Toronto Trinity College for Life Sciences, and wish to submit a letter requesting Special Consideration. My grades dropped about 10-15% during my last semester at school due to the fact that I was diagnosed with a 10lbs ovarian tumour in my abdomen, which was subsequently removed. However, the rehabilitation lasted several months, and I was fatigued, dealt with health-related depression and anxiety as well as severe pain, weakness and other symptoms. I lost a considerable amount of weight (approximately 30lbs both right after surgery and in the weeks following), and had a weakened immune system for months afterwards. All of this was happening during my final board examinations (I am from Austria, where I received my Austrian baccalaureate, similar to IB) as well as during my term as the elected student council president. My grades are acceptable (low 90s during last semester, 88 on final exams) with both exceptional grades in certain classes (Physics, Biology, French, English on finals are all in high 90s to perfect) and certain unfortunate standouts because of my prolonged absence and illness (Math and German, which I usually excelled at (low to high 90s), were in the high 70s, a score I had never received before. All in all, I was off school for about 4 months in total (was sick multiple times after going back, but took an initial two months leave), and I took my exams regularly with the other students.

The university calls that a letter of consideration must be submitted, along with a letter from a physician if health reasons are being stated. My doctor will submit a letter, but I am unsure of the format for my letter.

Any ideas? In particular, the introducting sentence. Would something like this be ok?

    To whom it may concern,

I am submitting this form in order to request Special Consideration as an applicant to the University of Toronto in the department of Life Sciences. Due to health complications and extensive surgery in November 2011, my attendance and grades throughout both my final year and my final board examinations suffered severly.

I plan on going into more detail in the second paragraph, but I intend on keeping it short and sweet. Is that ok?

    Thanks a ton in advance

  • Why am I always tired?

I'm an 18-year old girl that is relatively fit. I work out for an hour 3-4 times a week, and am active most days. I eat very healthy, and have just recently had a basic blood work-up. I have a slight iron deficiency, which I have had since I was a little child due to a genetic disorder, but I am treating it with supplements, and I also take a daily multivitamin. My other stats are fine, although it was only a simple blood count.

I am always tired, except for late at night. I can sleep 20 hours straight and still feel like staying in bed. Even after getting an adequate amount, it litterally takes every inch of willpower to get out of bed in the morning (or late afternoon, when I don't absolutely have to get up to go to work/school). I even skimp out of social gatherings that are, in my body's eyes, too early. At first I though I was just being lazy, which I'm sure everyone else thinks, but I know that this isn't normal. I am not a lazy person - I was student council president, I'm working two jobs, had perfect grades, ran an NGO for four years, etc. It's just gotten to the point where it can't be my personality. I feel like death every day crawling out of bed, and my sleep schedule always readjusts the longer I leave it to it's natural rhythm. Then, for example when I have to be at work early after a few days of not working, I will just not sleep altogether, so I can get up in time because my waking hours draw out into the early morning. I try, again and again, to get up early and get moving, but I just can't for some reason. I then feel tired, dizzy and gross all day. Then, when I try to go to sleep, even if I woke up at 7am, I'll get tired at around 5pm, but then I will spike at 8pm and only be able to drift off into sleep at 3 or 4 am. This is getting frustrating and I am missing out on life - I can't go to birthday parties, I dread working early and havign to do things early. I am an avid traveler, but have been finding it difficult to visit new areas because I have to get up early, and even after getting 12 hours sleep a night, I have to crash after about 5 or 6 days and sleep for 20+ hours to reload. I can't live my life normally, and I feel like I'm failing. I'm sure everyone else thinks I'm lazy, but that#s just not me! Something is wrong with my sleep.

Thanks so much in advance if you have any ideas. I'm going to book an appointment with my doctor once I get back from a two months stay in Europe, but I was wondering if anyone was experiencing the same or had any ideas as to what it could be. I need answers, because it's truly sucking the life out of me.

  • How accurate is a scale that also measures body fat?

    Hey there,

I just got weighed at the gym, and the scale also 'analysed' my body fat percentage. I am 18, 5'9", approximately 140lbs, and in pretty good shape. I have very muscular legs, slim arms and my waist is 65 cm, and I wear a small all around. I am a runner, and I do regular weight training as well as eating a clean diet (albeit nothing to extreme).

The body fat percentage measure said that my boyfat is 29.5 percent, which my trainer said fits into the overweight category. Now while I am well aware of the whole 'skinny-fat' phenomenon, it just struck me as odd in my particular case, since I work out regularly and don't have a lot of extra pudge on me (when I am standing straight, I mostly have to bend over to squeeze my stomach - the first two rows of muscles are visible, I am working on the next ones).

So my question is this: What is the margin of error on these scales? Ideally, I would like to get back down to 22% body fat (which I was two years ago, when I was doing off-trail alpine running mixed with multiple martial arts), but I doubt whether I am at 29% body fat - I also fit into the same clothes the same way I did when I was at 22. I have gained some, but certainly not that much?

    Thanks in advance...

  • What kind of degree would be useful for work in a conflict zone?

    Dear All,

I am currently taking a gap year, but I intend to begin my studies at the University of Toronto this September. I have always been interested in working in other cultures and conflict zones, as I enjoy living in different places and experiencing other cultures. As well, I think a job in such an area would be incredibly rewarding.

I am a female Canadian and Austrian citizen, and I speak English, German and French fluently, can converse in Spanish and Italian, understand Dutch and Norwegian and I am in the process of learning Arabic and Russian. I have, so far, experience in both International Relations and diplomacy, yet I don't know whether these would be the right paths for me.

In the future, I would love to work in communications or management somwhere in the Middle East (Afghanistan interests me in particular, as it was my area of specialty for a journalism project I was involved with for a few years). The army isn't really an option, as both Canada's and Austria's involvement is limited, but I would love to hear some other options. Other fields, such as information and intelligence or IT interest me as well.

Any ideas? Ideally the pay would be nice as well, but I'm mainly looking for an interesting, adventurous job that is rewarding as it is challenging, while meeting new people and being immersed in the culture.

What should I work towards, as far as degree and work experience is concerned?

  • What do you think of this? HELP?

    Hey there,

I am applying to Trinity College at the University of Toronto for biological anthropology and/or possibly immunology. For the college profile, we must complete a 400 word essay on this question:

Tell us about your academic interests and what you plan to study at U of T. How does your plan fit in with your long term goals?

I wanted to do something a bit different since I am sure they receive so many similar responses, so here is what I wrote:

The doors slide open and I catch a whiff of antiseptic, refiltered air. The nurses rush back and forth through the corridors, wheeling patients in and out of exam rooms, and the intercom buzzes incessantly. I squeamishly approach the front desk to announce my arrival. The receptionist tells me to take a seat in the waiting room, and I make my way through the obstacle course of tables, bags and annoyed glances as I brush past people’s legs. Of all the unfamiliar territory in a hospital, the bustling chaos of the waiting room is the one with which I can least acquaint myself.

Since I am a few minutes early, I unpack my anatomy book and scan through my previous work. Colour-coded notes line the pages that I carefully dissected the week previously. As much as I am thankful to my biology professor for signing me up to the internship, I am used to being prepared. Yet, studying the IV of the patient next to me brings me nothing but the knowledge that I do, in fact, know absolutely nothing.

Suddenly, I recall my Red Cross mentor’s advice. Medicine, he would say, is a field where you must simultaneously connect the dots of everything you know, and then throw all that out the window. Quoting George Carlin, he would joke that it is unnerving that doctors call what they do ‘practise’. I respect that this may have been sound advice that was meant to appease me before I stepped into an ambulance the first time, but I had my doubts whether my junior paramedic training, which kept me relatively sheltered from anything more severe than some fractured bones, would be of any help today.

My name is called on the intercom, and my heart skips a beat. I find myself thinking I would be well equipped with a DeLorean time machine. I could flash forward a few years, finish my studies, come back and be an instant medical whizz. Maybe biological anthropology, then medical school, and I could zip back in time to enter the heavy metal door I was approaching. The nurse hands me a set of dark blue scrubs, and as I slip into them, I notice they feel remarkably like pyjamas. This might actually turn out alright, as long as nobody asks me for directions.

I will definitely get it proofread a few more times, but I am worried that this may be not exactly what they were expecting. However, I don't really see the point in writing the same essay as a hundred other people. We also have to write another essay about our extracurriculars, and I have included my interests and the draw of U of T in that one, so is this ok?

  • What can I tell my friend to stop laying into me about food?

    Hey there guys,

A bit of my back story: I have been vegetarian going on 5 years now, and have been vegan for a year. I am a healthy weight, albeit on the slim size, am rarely sick except for migraines, have tons of energy and only have iron deficiency, however I have had this since I was a little girl and seems to be ingrained in my genetic make-up instead of related to my diet.

I often deal with a lot of stupid comments from people when they find out I'm vegan (I don't usually tell people until they notice it when I sit down at the dinner table because of this) but recently, my friend has bee really laying into me. I normally eat a big bowl of fruit for breakfast, which normally consists of banana, apple, strawberries and pineapple. I generally sprinkle some coconut, walnuts, chia seed and 1 tbsp oatmeal on top, then I have some green tea and maybe a toasted full grain mini-pita (with nothing on it... they taste like chips haha) so that I can absorb my multivitamin a bit better. I always feel full and satisfied with this, and I find it wakes me up better than any other breakfast. My friend, on the other hand, won't stop digging into me about how all it is is sugar and the reason I'm not hungry for hours is because I don#t eat right and it's unhealthy to eat so little and my body needs protein and BLABLABLA. MY stats are excellent, with the eception of iron, which I am taking supplements for. How can I get her to stop?

  • What do you think of this paragraph?

Hey there guys, I'm writing a college essay about my personal interests and how they tie in with my academic goals. So what do you think about this as an introduction?

The school counsellor’s office is a friendly room with pale yellow walls, a wooden desk and two padded chairs, one of them occupied by a woman with massive curly hair and a warm smile. Piles of student files and course books are jumbled in unimposing chaos, and the air smells strongly of coffee. She welcomes me in, offers me a cup, and I pass her my course form. After eyeing the scribbled paper, she laughs. I have chosen twice as many courses as most of my peers in a meek attempt to stretch my weekly hour limit. After discussing the benefits of a course in biotechnology in relation to elementary particle physics, I take both. Luckily, I have two more years to try and take every course that my school offers. I would be well equipped with a DeLorean time machine.

everybody talks like it’s a dime a dozen

    so why waste your time

but you threw me a glance that left me frozen

now I want to throw the dice

it’s a messy game we play, and soon the devil will pay

    but where there’s a will, there’s a way

    there’s a will, there’s a way

    there’s a will, there’s a way

reads like it was written in the stars, you took it too far

always wanting more turned into a tug of war

you were written in code, left me for dead on the road

you chilled me to the core in this tug of war

    war, uh oh

    war, uh oh

    war, uh oh

    in this tug of war

everybody’s got some bodies in their closet

but your basement is full of them too

never would I know when you hit me like a comet

what the hell I got into

it’s a messy game we play, and soon the devil will pay

    but where there’s a will, there’s a way

    there’s a will, there’s a way

    there’s a will, there’s a way

reads like it was written in the stars, you took it too far

always wanting more turned into a tug of war

you were written in code, left me for dead on the road

you chilled me to the core in this tug of war

    war, uh oh

    war, uh oh

    war, uh oh

    in this tug of war

the harder the conflict the bigger the triumph

I couldn’t predict all we’d have left is silence

you cherry pick the truth to suit your needs

tear me down and try to fix me

it was written in the stars, you took it too far

always wanting more turned into a tug of war

you were written in code, left me dead on the road

you chilled me to the core in this tug of war

in this tug of war (war, uh oh)

in this tug of war (war, uh oh)

in this tug of war (war, uh oh)

the harder the conflict the bigger the triumph

I couldn’t predict all we’d have left is silence

you cherry pick the truth to suit your needs

tear me down but can’t fix me

oh, it was written in the stars

  • Just called the cops cause I heard someone screaming, what do you think will happen?

I by chance had my window cracked and was up, and I am 99% sure I heard a woman screaming pretty loudly for about 20 seconds. It sounded like she was fighting, but since I live right beside a park, it could have, by the off chance, also been cats or something. I didn't know, and it kinda freaked me out, so I called the cops and told them. They are now sending officers to check the area.

My question is this: What if what I heard was nothing? I figured I'd be better safe than sorry and call, but what if they find nothing? Will that cause issues for me?

  • What artist name is better? (Poll)?

    Hey there yahoo community :)

Anyways, I'm a musician that is trying to figure out which stage name to take on. All of them are derived from my personal life, but I can't decide. I ant something to be catchy, memorable, and with the possibility to make a good logo.

    The options are:

    Kava

    Kava Hess

    Ephe

What do you think is better and why?

  • What do you think of these lyrics?

Hey guys, just writing some stuff and wanted to hear some feedback. It's no where near done (only the first two verses), but where do you see this going? What comes to mind when you read it?

    Here goes:

do you know that feeling of anticipation

when something bad is about to happen

reason upon reason why you shouldn't be so thrilled

but you can't help yourself diving in headfirst

this is a slippery slope we're on, dead before it began

but how can you derail when you never had a path?

that leads to one conclusion, so you do the math

I still feel it in my bones, what's done is past

just pitch some ideas - what images come to mind? I know where I'm going but I guess I'd like to see if I'm just imagining things haha
