What kind of degree would be useful for work in a conflict zone?
Dear All,
I am currently taking a gap year, but I intend to begin my studies at the University of Toronto this September. I have always been interested in working in other cultures and conflict zones, as I enjoy living in different places and experiencing other cultures. As well, I think a job in such an area would be incredibly rewarding.
I am a female Canadian and Austrian citizen, and I speak English, German and French fluently, can converse in Spanish and Italian, understand Dutch and Norwegian and I am in the process of learning Arabic and Russian. I have, so far, experience in both International Relations and diplomacy, yet I don't know whether these would be the right paths for me.
In the future, I would love to work in communications or management somwhere in the Middle East (Afghanistan interests me in particular, as it was my area of specialty for a journalism project I was involved with for a few years). The army isn't really an option, as both Canada's and Austria's involvement is limited, but I would love to hear some other options. Other fields, such as information and intelligence or IT interest me as well.
Any ideas? Ideally the pay would be nice as well, but I'm mainly looking for an interesting, adventurous job that is rewarding as it is challenging, while meeting new people and being immersed in the culture.
What should I work towards, as far as degree and work experience is concerned?
I stated that I already am taking a gap year, but I doubt that anything will come between my college education and I. I am using the time to recover from invasive surgery, as well as travel and work a bit.

It sounds like you're extremely bright but I would like to offer you some advice I think you need to hear whether you take it or not. Don't take a gap year, you could totally ruin you chances of going to college in one year whether you know it or not. You could get a car, get a good job, get a boyfriend, or many other things that would discourage you from going to college. Freshman college courses are simple, and I find college much easier than high school. I assume you are more intelligent than I am so just take take the plunge. I would say international relations to answer your question.
