We are some students who want to do fundraising for an overseas charity at our university, and it would be great to do something exceptional that gets attention. For example, with another charity we do homeless week once a year when we sleep rough on campus for some days to raise funds for our soup run for homeless people, which is really successful. I am thinking of something similarly excepional, but related to basic education in poor countries. There are volunteers going to these schools each summer, so there are people here who could talk about their experiences there.

I just realized that I'm lesbian. I'm already 27 and feel weird about realizing this only so late in my life. I have Social Anxiety Disorder which has largely kept me a way from a normal social life and dating. I've also suffered from depression a lot. I started to get treatment for my anxiety and depression lately, and as my condition improved I can now think about dating and a relationship, and I feel I'm simply not attracted to men but that I've actually always liked girls but used to suppress my feelings and didn't see them as what they were. Like there was a girl in my class that I actually really was in love with but I tried to see it a way as if I just really wanted to be best friends with her. I've never been attracted to men sexually but given my social anxiety, it felt easiest to just be celibate. I had two short-lived and unhappy sexual relationships with men, but feel I only slept with them because I didn't want to be alone and hate the memory of it. I grew up in a very homophobic environment in which homosexuality was simply treated as non-existent. I want to talk to someone about my feelings but don't know how. Although I'm already 27 I feel in a way as if I just hit puberty.

I'm not sure how good my English is, so it would be nice if you could read one or more of the following answers I gave and tell me if there are any grammar mistakes in them or if I used any expressions or words that sound strange. If you find something, please correct me.

Und wieviel hat die Art der Reaktionen eurer Meinung nach mit der Art des Unterrichts zu tun? Also wie sind/waren z.B. die Reaktionen auf sachlichen Geschichtsunterricht im Vergleich zu denen in anderen Fächern wie Deutsch oder Religion, wo man sich eher auch mit persönlichen Geschichten beschäftigt?

Wenn ja, weswegen wurdet ihr oder der betreffende Schüler gemobbt? Wie haben andere Schüler und die Lehrer reagiert?

Und was könnte man eurer Meinung nach dagegen tun?

Ich bin selber in Deutschland zur Schule gegangen (1987-2000), würde aber gerne auch von anderen hören, wie das Thema in der Schule behandelt wird/wurde, weil ich den Eindruck habe, dass es da große Unterschiede gibt. Wir hatten das Thema z.B. zum ersten Mal in der 6. Klasse, jetzt habe ich aber von mehreren Leuten gehört, dass es bei ihnen erst in der 9. Klasse drangekommen ist. Mich würde auch interessieren, wo bei euch die Schwerpunkte liegen/lagen, inwieweit das Thema in verschiedenen Fächern behandelt wird/wurde und wie so die Reaktionen der Schüler sind/waren. Über ausführliche Antworten würde ich mich besonders freuen.

Es fällt mir auf, dass viele junge Deutsche das Gefühl haben, dass "man" (Wer soll das überhaupt sein?) sie für NS-Verbrechen verantwortlich machen würde, von ihnen verlangen würde, sich schuldig zu fühlen oder sich zu schämen usw. Viele wollen scheinbar deswegen nichts mehr von der Geschichte hören.

Wer hat euch dieses Gefühl vermittelt? Ich bin selber Deutsche und habe das nie erfahren, obwohl ich viele Leute kennengelernt habe, deren Völker wirklich sehr unter den Nazis gelitten haben, und auch KZ-Überlebende. Natürlich ist niemand an etwas schuld, das vor seiner Geburt geschehen ist, und ich habe noch nie gehört, dass jemand so etwas ernsthaft behauptet hätte.

Das scheint mir so die gängige Meinung hier bei Clever zu sein. Ich habe gestern in einer Antwort geschrieben, dass man das nicht vergessen darf und habe gleich sechs Daumen runter bekommen. Ich kann das nicht verstehen. Es ist wirklich noch nicht sehr lange her und es leben sogar noch Menschen, die das erlebt haben.

Ist es für euch wirklich nur eine "Pflichtübung", sich daran zu erinnern und darüber zu lernen, weil es irgendjemand von euch verlangt? Und seht ihr das in erster Linie als Vorwurf, also habt ihr das Gefühl, dass euch jemand sagt, dass ihr euch schuldig fühlen solltet oder euch schämen solltet? Es scheint mir so, dass viele Deutsche so ein Gefühl haben, obwohl ihnen niemand so etwas sagt.

Das soll jetzt eigentlich gar kein Vorwurf sein, ich wundere mich nur.

I ask this because I see many questions on Holocaust denial on American Y!A, either by people who deny it themselves or by people who ask why people deny it. Among the answers to other Holocaust related questions there are also often Holocaust denials.

I know that on a website like this bigots are overrepresented because of the anonymity of the Internet so I understand that in real life it's certainly not as bad as here on Y!A, but still I'd like to know how much of it is present in real life in America, because here on Y!A it's extreme.

I'm not American and have never lived there.

I also read in one answer here how someone wrote about how he uses to react to Holocaust deniers in real life in the US and it shocked me to read that it occurs even in real life.

I adressed this mainly to Americans because this is the American Y!A but if you are from some other country I'd be interested in your answer as well.

It was a very good question and there were several very racist answers. This is just one example, I've seen it in other questions and the answers to them as well. Is it just because of the anonymity of the Internet that people write this way and is this Y! Answers a club of the racists, or is this normal in America?

I'm not American and don't live in the US.

I always read this term here in the questions regarding different people who were persecuted and killed by the Nazis. "Gypsy" is the dictionary translation of the German term "Zigeuner" (I'm German) which is derogatory similarly like "*****", while the correct term in German now is "Sinti and Roma" (I mean some of them are Sinti and others are Roma), which are the words they use for themselves. I hesitate to use the word "Gypsy" because it sounds racist to me, but my question now is if it sounds derogatory for native English speakers and also if anyone understands what I mean if I write "Sinti and Roma". I use to answer these questions and I am irritated about the usage of words now.

If you have time I'd like to answer you an additional question: What are your associations with the word "Gypsy"? What comes to your mind? Isn't the word loaded with prejudice?

Ich glaube nicht, dass solche Gedanken möglich sind, wenn man wenigstens grundlegende Geschichtskenntnisse besitzt. Daher frage ich mich, wie es möglich ist, sich heute in Deutschland so vollständig von Geschichtskenntnissen abzuschirmen. Wie wurde/wird bei euch die Geschichte in der Schule behandelt? Ich bin selber in Deutschland zur Schule gegangen, aber mich interessiert, wieweit sich das bei verschiedenen Lehrern unterscheidet.

In den Antworten zu einer kürzlich gestellten Frage über die Berichterstattung über Israel habe ich u.a. die folgenden Aussagen gelesen. Die meisten Antworten gingen in diese Richtung. Wie viele Leute in Deutschland denken heute so? Floriert der Antisemitismus?

Im Zusammenhang mit dem Kopftuch-Verbot an deutschen Schulen wird oft argumentiert, dass man sich als westliche Frau in muslimischen Ländern ja auch anpassen müsste. Dabei wird oft selbstverständlich angenommen, dass man in muslimischen Ländern Kopftuch tragen müsste. Ich würde gerne wissen, wieviele Leute dieser Meinung sind und woher sie diese Meinung beziehen.
