I'm a Mechanical Engineer and have a strong interest in almost all branches of science.

  • How to format portable hard drive for mac and PC, using a MAC?

I have some files on my MAC that I would like to put onto my hard drive so I can use them on my PC. So I believe I would need to have the hard drive formatted for both computers (to be able to move the files). I will need to do the formatting on my MAC so if any one could help me that would be greatly appreciated. I would assume I'd use the 'disk utility' on my MAC to do the formatting (or if you have another recommendation).

  • How to convert .avi file to DVD format on Mac?

I have a .avi file and I would like to convert it to a format to watch it on a DVD player. I have the roxio titanium software but each time I drag the .avi file into the software it says 'it was not added because a required codec is missing'. I was wondering how to fix this problem. Or if anyone else has another better software I can use. All the forums I have seen say all types of things that haven't seemed to correct this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

  • Is there a website where you can search for a person's criminal background for FREE?

There are many sites that say it is free, but after going through the process you end up having to pay. I know I've been able to do this before without having to pay. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • What should I name my puppy?

He's a white large dog breed. He kinda walks bow-legged. I was hoping to combine these somehow and haven't been able to think of a creative one yet. Any suggestions?

  • Question about mechanical drawing in ASME Y14.5 standards?

In an assembly drawing, there are parts that are going to be fastened together. To do so it seems they will be using a bolt of some sort. Well on the drawing next to the indication of the holes, theres a symbol I'm not too sure of. It is only there when the hole does not break through the part to the other side. For example, it reads 6X (diameter symbol) 0.89 (downward arrow symbol with perpendicular line at the top) 0.205. So I'm basically wondering what this is stating? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Also, does a drawing have to all be in the same significant figures to follow these standards?

  • Question about dimensioning and tolerancing in ASME Y14.5 standards?

I'm not too familiar with GD&T standards, and really need some help. These could be simple questions but any help on any of the questions would be greatly appreciated.

Does a tolerance have to have both a positive and a negative? for example, is 3.000 +0.001 -0.000 ok?

What do parantheses mean around a number?

Is there a specific gap size that needs to be incorporated to make sure an assembly is possible? For example, if a male part is 3.000 in diameter can it fit into a female part thats 2.999 in diameter?

Is there a minimal radius size a machinist can perform? For fillets and such.

  • Whats a way, or ways, to move an object in and out of the line of sight (using a motor)?

I need to move an object into and out of the line of sight so the system can perform 2 different functions (1 function when its in the line of sight, and one when it has been removed from the line of sight). I need to use a motor to do so. Also it must be a highly repeatable process (thousandth of an inch from its original position). The object is rigid and cannot take on any deformation. There are objects relatively close by that could help as a foundation, if a mechanical arm were implemented.

The whole system is in a small scale. The object is lightweight, somewhere around a few ounces is my guess. The motion operation does not need to be all that fast, although it wouldn't hurt if it were. I'm only worried about whether the mechanism can do the process at this point, I can worry about speed later. TRANSLATIONAL motion of the object would be best. This way tolerances have a better chance to be maintained.

I'm attempting to minimize cost and be very efficient at the same time. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

  • Is there a material that does not affect light?

Perhaps very thin glass, or another material for example? It would have to have the same index of refraction I imagine. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Whats the best method to obtain a mechanical engineering job in this market?

I've been searching for a job for a few months now and haven't been able to obtain a job. I'm a recent ME graduate and have used Monster, Yahoo Hot Jobs and a couple other sites. I'm a bit picky with jobs but its coming to the point where I'm almost desperate. I'm willing to relocate to anywhere and interested in nearly all forms of science. Any individual experience and/or recommendation would mean the world to me. Thanks for any help.

  • how much does it cost to remove, and install, flooring from Lowe's?

I'm looking to get a quote to have my current flooring removed (carpet and laminate) and have glazed tiling installed? I'm doing the project myself but would like to know a ballpark idea what to charge so I can beat the Lowe's price. Last I knew it was 4.50/sq.ft to install tile, but I have no idea about the removal.

  • How do you thicken text in Photoshop CS5?

I know the bold, faux bold and stroke methods but all of which seem to lose quality to the text (i.e. the 'sharpness' of the font). I've also tried the crisp, sharp, etc. options but those arent thick enough. Essentially I'm looking for something in-between faux bold and regular text.
