Overheard on board a ship: "Are we in port yet sir?" "No, we are still up to our knees in wine". "So we really do travel 100000 times the speed of light?" "Yep! No one is kept in the dark". "How long will this journey take?" "According to Captain Slog, three and a half months, to travel 8.2 million light years".
Should Easter Sunday in 2019 be on 24 March?
It is determined by the Sunday after the full moon after the spring equinox (as determined by the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD). So, the spring equinox is on Wednesday 20 March at 21:58, the full moon after that is on Thursday 21 March at 01:42, so Easter Sunday should be March 24. Has someone miscalculated?

Although passenger jets have wings below the fuselage, presumably for safety and noise; military aircraft sometimes have wings above the fuselage.

As well as tyre sizes (e.g. 700 x 38c) which are printed on the side of a tyre, there are normally a set of other numbers alongside, split by a short hyphen. What do these other numbers mean?

Did anyone see the partial lunar eclipse on Thursday 25th April? I did not know there was going to be one, but I saw the moon that night, around 21:20, and the Moon appeared to have had a small piece chipped out of the top of it. This would have been right at the end of the eclipse.

What is the most times you have had to return something to a shop for an exchange or refund? Yesterday I fitted a new door latch to my front door, but had to make 4 trips to 2 different shops for exchanges and refunds due to having the wrong size of latch. This is despite measuring things up beforehand. I've finally fitted to the right one though.

Does anyone know where The Children of the Damned was filmed? This is the 1963 sequel to Village of the Damned from 1960. There are no shots showing street names apart from one which is very faint and in the distance, and some of the original area where the film was made looked like it was due for demolition.

The reason I am asking this is because classical drummers play standing up. Also, I was reading that a well known drummer (Phil Collins) had retired and it was partly due to sitting hunched while playing the drums. Whether this is a common problem with rock drummers I don't know. So would playing while standing up be a better option?

Can an employer make someone work alone at night, where:
1) The night shift starts at 01:15, and ends at 07:45
2) It is in a 54 bed hostel for young people
3) There could be threatening or potentially violent situations
4) Building security could be compromised
5) On call back is available.
The law on lone working seems unclear, and I need advice on this. Many thanks.

6 AntwortenAstronomy & Spacevor 9 JahrenHave you received a silent call where the line has then remained dead for several hours?
This happened to me on Saturday. I had 3 silent calls within 10 minutes. After the third call I put the receiver back down again, then picked it up. The line was 'dead'. I put the receiver down again, and over the following few hours checked the line. Nothing. If the caller keeps their phone off the hook, can it cause your phone to remain silent, and prevent others from calling you?

Would Easter be better if its date was fixed instead of moveable? What would be a suitable fixed date for Easter? I think the first weekend of May (Friday to Monday) would be better as a fixed date for Easter, because the weather is warmer, even though chocolate is more likey to melt. Good Friday could be the first Friday in May, and Easter Sunday the first Sunday.

Why has turkey become the traditional Christmas meal? I would rather have something different. Has anyone ever had game bird, such as pheasant, partridge, grouse, or any other type of bird? Are there other ideas?
6 AntwortenChristmasvor 1 JahrzehntThis is my most recent poem. It is about how natural things decay back to soil, but not man made objects?
Whereby Upon
Whereby upon our deaths
Or emerging lives traversing soils
Upon which lie discarded bony branches
Cut from emerging trees
To become
That from whence they came ~
And under sky, rain with wind,
Forces swim while drone bees encircle
Navigating ripples flexed by south wind;
Petals, fallen leaves
Shroud creatures dried on their backs,
That find their way, or their way is found ~
Back to ground, dissolved, abound,
Whereby upon their deaths slices water
In front withdrawing asides,
Behind its curtain closing
To dark,
Merely where light's finger has yet to touch.
What remains refuses departure,
Never a stray spirit or phantom's woe;
As monuments to plasticity stand,
Becoming new headstones, whereby
Upon our deaths after all else walks
Such moulded tombs, metal, and poisoned gold ~
Sit, wait, piled, impenetrable to all
But stale air wisps,
Microbials and their kin; eventually
Whereupon moulded death such cavities appear
Where suffocating weight collapses
As roots pierce through from whence they came.
Where would each apple fall
If after yielding
For Autumnal harvest
They stand petrified
On tideless shores
Where only salt from sea breeze accompanies~
Whereupon ground's nourishing
To nothing,
Voids' dark,
And decayless,
Where not even we could walk
Lest fruits born fell from aged stalk.
5 AntwortenPoetryvor 1 JahrzehntI have just written this poem about school proms. Are proms about perfection these days?
School Prom
From tatty papers pinned to cork boards
Above their antisceptic floors,
Holiday rest time approaches with
One more wipe before multitude foot prints
Of polished high heel shoes scratching over.
As tatty papers flap in corridors
Announcing this year's school prom
As it was in previous days, now CD Roms
Awaken, bugle like, pupils from their doms
Of leafy suburb or grey concrete box dream.
Across roundabouts bubble gum pink limos stretch
Followed by Humvees with tyres higher than
Groups of young girls giggling within
Surrounding a cooled black man in darkened shades,
No lone figure, thinks the driver in front.
Silver finger exhaust pipes feel their way
To stretch and cool air from engine to exit.
Crinolene dresses hover across herring bone floors,
With flowers and other fine details got just right,
Down to patterned fingernails in absolute perfection.
Not 50p to pay and free bags of chips
Or a beefburger like shoe tongue folded in bap;
Today's perfections in their never never land
Of last days of term, one final meet,
Merge into long summer's laze, awaiting post school days.

I'm interested in the history of Paternoster Square, and visited the area last week. I liked it, and compared it with an aerial view taken around 2001 which showed the older 60's office blocks. Do you remember what Paternoster Square was like in the 1960's, or before it was bombed in the war? Do you remember the TV series from the 1960s that was made there?
