Lone Working at night?

Can an employer make someone work alone at night, where:

1) The night shift starts at 01:15, and ends at 07:45

2) It is in a 54 bed hostel for young people

3) There could be threatening or potentially violent situations

4) Building security could be compromised

5) On call back is available.

The law on lone working seems unclear, and I need advice on this. Many thanks.

    Well a lot depends on your contract. Most employment contracts state a time and place of work. Different hours and locations require additional negotiation.

    Supposing your contract allows them to ask you to work at that time, you have to remember that your employer has a legal requirement to provide a safe working environment (or pay hazard pay if not).

    If the environment is genuinely unsafe you can lodge a claim for compensation when quitting.

    Check your contract, some employers pay more via premiums to work the graveyard shift also what begs the question is that it was probably made clear when you started the job what was expected why query now, because due to the nature of this kind of work it's accepted that people either work on a rota basis or be flexible due to the chaotic nature of the clients. Back up is available which although does'nt sound good is standard but if you feel threatened or hostility call the police it's expected.
