Do nightvision goggles work over the gas masks our military uses?
I feel like we have a very good military here in the US but im curious as to how a gas attack at night would work. Would night vision still work in the gas would you be left blind in the dark with you mask on?

Yes they can as all have straps and head harnesses that are adjustable and so they can fit over a mask. Use of them like that though is more difficult and there are whole host of problems for the wearer that they have to learn to overcome. Depth perception for NVGs continues to be a problem for the common soldier. Those NVGs issued are not as good optically like what a helicopter pilot is issued and they are still developing newer, better ones like what was used in the Ben-laden raid that actually had two sets of optics. One set of optics for up close and the other for distance and that in turn further helps cutting down on the distortion of depth perception. The standard issue though only has one set of optics which is why individuals really need to train using them and doing their jobs while wearing them.
One of my additional duties one time was NVG instructor and I went to a class surrounding their use, general maintenance, and was certified to train others in them and did so along with having to use them at times myself while doing my job in the military. Driving with them and operating on an aircraft or performing other close distance tasks can be a little tricky and then of course you also get into the whole light management thing of no white light and only green or red light being used in any environment where they are being employed. White light of course causes the electronic circuit in them to shut down and re calibrate which can take 3-7 seconds depending on the battery and the circuit and how many times that circuit has had to reset. That circuit does have a life to it and must be replaced after a thousand or so resets. That's why you can sometimes find and buy them cheap in some military surplus stores and what not; the circuit has been blown or near the end of its life and takes longer to reset.
Three seconds does not sound like a long time to reset but it is when you are involved in something like driving a vehicle or in combat operations of any kind.

The lenses for the protective mask are clear enough so you can still use NVGs while wearing the mask. You may have to adjust them a little bit but they will still work. As for the gas itself blocking your vision, not all gases have color to them. Many of them are clear.

if the gas was a problem for them, they would NOT work, regardless of what's BEHIND them.. their principle of operation is amplifying ambient light. the vizor of the gas mask for all purposes is no different from any other glass/ plexi around.
the modern chemical weapons do not come around in a spectacular billowing clouds of menacingly glowing thick smoke.
