China had no real army until Japan invaded in WWII. They built the Great Wall of China to keep the mongrel hordes out (I mean Mongolians) because they had no real army and a huge border to protect. We traded with the Chinese But it wasn't until the 19th century that Britain really toon an interest in China and Japan (Boxer rebellion, opium war)

The chinese did not keep much of a standing army back then. This was one of the reasons it was so easy for the brits to colonize portions of china.
