how to manually repair a corrupt host file?

I got some kind of nasty virus, that has messed my ability to access my internet browsers. I know the internet itself works, because I can use my Yahoo messenger, but I can't get on the web.  I primarily use Mozilla Firefox, and when I try to get online, it will shut down, and then tell me that Firefox has crashed.  As a result, I can't download anything.  The virus has turned my Norton off, so it can't update. When I try, Norton tells me that I have a corrupt Host file, causing it to not be able to connect with one of it's providers.  
Does anyone know how to manually repair a corrupt host file? The only thing I'm finding online are all downloads.

The easiest way is to simply replace the Hosts file.  I recommend using the MVPS Hosts File, which can be found at: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm.  It will not only replace the infected file, but does so with a file that will block many of the malware sites that exist.

You cannot repair a file which is corrupt, without re-installing the software. So you can try uninstalling Norton and then re-installing it again. If this doesn't solve the problem, I think the only option is a fresh installation of the operating system itself!

You might be able to just find it on your Windows install disc and just copy to you PC in the same location as the corrupt one ofcourse. Just put your disc in and search it for whatever file you need. 

If you still have virus problems use one of the two below and be sure you change the name of the exe file to something else, for example "pictures" install and run.

a short fix for this may help position your operating device disc in click on commence and then run variety in cmd variety in sfc /scannow this may help with fixing some damaged registry archives. sturdy success
