Where is the US Navy when the Somali Pirates attack?

I would like to know what part the US Navy is playing in the new threat to global shipping posed by these pirates operating in the Somali Coastal Area. How many vessels do we have supporting this piracy elimination threat? What success, if any, have they had so far?

What type of intelligence operations are being set up to track and identify the supporters of the Pirate organizations? Have they mounted any recent operations to cut off or destroy these pirates before they strike again? Why not?

This doesn't fall into the jurisdiction of the US NAVY. It's a matter of corporate security. It's the duty of these corporations to secure the passage of their cargo, not the military. The US Navy has better things to do.

First of all, when operating in Somali waters, we technically can do nothing about it (it is an act of war) according to international law. The pirates know this and very much operate in Somali territorial waters. Also, keep in mind, the Navy has less than 300 Ships, and they are stretched thin fighting two wars. But, when presented, there have been numerous engagements so far with the Navy and the pirates in that region. Just right now, it's not a major national security threat.

The pirates are not attacking US shipping,

So why would the US Navy do anything ?

It is the responsibility of each country to protect thier own commercial shipping.

Plus, most people have no idea, just how much area is involved or just how many ships pass the Somoli coast every single day.

If our people were killed they will be tried for capital murder punishable by death. Each of the Somalis will be tried individually to determine the guilt or innocence they may have. The International maritime law allows any country to arrest and put on trial any offenders they might apprehend.. In some arab counties it might mean beheading. Here it will probably mean 20 yrs. in federal prison. Go figure!!

The Israel lobby doesnt feel like wasting gentiles to fight somali pirates...

it's hard to do something... theres all kinda rules and regulations about boarding other boats if they're caught the country which they came from doesnt want them(or nobody wants to hand them out because of fear of torture) and the country which catches them arent allowed legally to prosecute them in their own country...

a navy vessel from my country stopped a pirate boat but to board they had to contact some US military thingy in Somalia first ok fine... then they send what is equvilant to navy seals to confiscate their weapons and thats all they were legally allowed to do... and thats pretty much what happens all the time...

all the shipping companies can do is sail in convoys

You realize it is the US Navy not the Somalian Navy, not the Somalian Navy. The US Navy will not be the protectors of world shipping. It sounds like an African problem, let them deal with it. I don't see pirates off the coast of the US.

They are there in force, along with all the other responsibilities they have protecting the world, while the world bitches and complains

yeh, and where are the self defense guards equipped with snipers and rocket launchers on these ships? those little boats would be such easy targets, right? so it makes you wonder what in the hell is going on.

very odd situation. i suspect this is a setup for a larger plan, such as the all-out invasion of somolia or something we cannot see. are they just giving them enough rope?

it is not what it appears to be. the "news" conglomerates just play along with the global politicians who are into cloak and dagger bs! maybe there is some oil to be had, eh? watch out, it just might be exxon and halliburton again. do not trust superficial "news" like this. it is bs.

Why is it our job to police the waters? If somalia doesn't attack us why should we attack them. Our foreign policy is ****** up we don't need to be spending more money on things that don't concern us.
