How can I stop husband's snoring that wakes me up in the middle of the night?

I have the same issue. I've been living with it for 37 years now. I've learned that snoring is mainly caused by a blocked airway preventing an easy, consistent flow of breath from the lungs to the nasal cavity when the back of the tongue rests at the roof of the mouth closing off the air at the back of the throat. What can help is buying a really good quality thermos bottle for hot drinks, keep it at his bedside table filled with one of these 3 liquids: hot PEPPERMINT herbal tea (made by Celestial Seasonings), BREATHE DEEP tea (made by Yogi Tea, yellow packets) or hot, sweetened lemon juice and water (half cup of each liquid with 1 tsp sugar or substitute) to keep his tongue tight and rigid the way singers do before and after a performance. I come from a history of singers and happen to have asthma (which can sometimes make me snore on a bad air quality day). So, of course, that means my husband and I take turns getting on each other's nerves drifting off to sleep when my asthma acts up. Haha. However, after seeing a specialist who suggested the old "overnight clinical study at the hospital" route, which was really to line their pockets and didn't help a bit, I found my own remedies: #1) 2-hour cat-naps when possible, in the middle of the day (you're not as tired and do less sucking for air at bedtime); #2) mild, over-the-counter sleeping pills keep the throat muscles relaxed; #3) a doctor's prescription for a muscle relaxer called Baclofen (generic name), Lioresal (clinical name) serves the same purpose as the sleeping pills; #4) sleeping either on the side hip or the stomach with the head facing all the way left or right, whichever is most comfortable, without a pillow throughout the night; #5) wearing a doctor's mask with Vick's Vapor Rub smeared on a thin, small, square sheet of paper towel (sticky side against the inside of the mask, nose against the dry side of the paper towel in the mask); #6) herbal medicine teas and drinks like the ones I listed above. I've found that these simple ideas work perfectly for me. I hope they work for you. Your only true task is getting the hubby to go along with it all. We all know how men fight every remedy and cure-all we come up with to make them well. Haha. Good luck with this one! Oh, by the way, when all else fails on nights that he's just too tired for anything to work, I wear my IN-EAR earphones with my music playing me to sleep. The best remedy of them all. I love it! I never hear a thing!

Insist he goes to the doctor for a sleep study and they will give him a cpap machine. If is funny looking on them, but they work well. I started sleeping on the couch and refused to get back in our bed until my husband did so.He sleeps way better with the cpap too.

Make an appointment with a sleep clinic and get him tested. He could have sleep apnea which is a serious medical condition that can be treated.

Nose strip don't work. Trust me they don't. My husband can wake up the neighborhood. I took his pillow away and that has cut his snoring down a lot. It could be caused by being over weight or if he's been drinking/ over tired. All things he can manage.

The breath rites are the easiest thing to try. If they don't work have him see a doc to rule out medical crap. Apnea has a whole lot of other impacts to ones life, anxiety, depression, weight gain to name a few. The machine though, has a noise all it's own. You could try a white noise machine, a fan, head phones or ear plugs, or sleep in another room or the couch. Those last two can kill a sex life and intimacy which can kill a marriage.

First and foremost have your husband go to check and make sure its just regular snoring and not Sleep Apnea. Sleep Apnea is a medical condition where your body is not getting enough oxygen when you sleep and should be checked before trying other remedies such as dental guards and nose strips.

The nasal strips help, but unfortunately not enough to stop snoring in severe cases. It could be sleep apnea, sinus infection, or something else. See an ear, nose, and throat specialist to find out. You may have to sleep in separate rooms until he's diagnosed and treated. You have to get your rest, too.
