MPG of 26 foot Uhaul uphill?

Question

I am helping a friend move from Phoenix, AZ, to NC and we want to avoid the I-10. We are moving mid-July and the heat will be too much for his horse if we go through El Paso. The I-40 is a much cooler route, so I was wondering what the most efficient route will be.

AZ-87 to the 260, then through Holbrook: Not an option as construction will have the roads closed.

AZ-87 through Payson to Winslow: Decent option, only adds 20 miles over above route.

I-17 to the I-40 through Flagstaff: Probably has the least steep paths, but adds 80 miles over the Route 260 option.

We will have a 26' Uhaul truck towing a 3,000 pound car on an auto transport. The truck will likely be around 75% full.

Which path will be more efficient? The I-17 will probably be more fuel efficient with better grades, but the added distance may totally negate that advantage. What does the Yahoo world think?

Get a U-Pack container to haul your stuff and just drive the vehicle you will be towing. No need for driving a U-Haul at all. And about the same price.

Look at the pass elevations. You want the route with the lowest numbers.

Where would the horse be? If they are leaving Phoenix, take I-10 since the horse is used to the heat. If you are worried about El Paso, try to go thru at night.

There is no simple way to calculate this since there is weather and speeds to be considered and you offer none because none can be offered. Are you female? Females tend to worry over the tiniest things for nothing. Towing  will cancel much of everything. Go the shortest route.

you will not get any better gas mileage up hill or down hill loaded or empty with a u- haul truck.
