What laws are in place to protect developers when consumers offer their product online for free?

For example,

A team of programmers makes a great app for mobile devices. This app becomes quite popular, but after a while, the team notices that someone put it online for people to download for free. Are the programmers protected by laws?

NOTE: This is not limited to the US, are there any international laws etc that can protect the developers?

Software is patentable. If this was not done you are out of luck unless it has been less than a year that is was first sold and you can prove you were the first to invent. Then you can apply for a patent to protect it. With patent in hand go after them.

Honestly, thieves are smarter than the police. Can't help it? Bruce, when I read cyber laws I too felt that there should be an end to piracy. Its really really heartening. I too had been a victim of this in the past.
