Lying On A Apprenticeship Application?

I'm going to sign up for a steamfitting apprenticeship tomorrow, but I'm scared my job history will hurt me. After high school, I went a few years without having a job and I know that can look bad. I was thinking about saying I worked at a restaurant for a few years that has gone out of business so if they did try to get in contact with the place, they couldn't. Should I do this? I want to do it the honest way, but I really want this to work out and I know other people have lied too. And lying about having one job isn't something that I will find that would haunt me and will regret it tremendously. Thanks!

Update:

TheCareerAdvisor, I have helped family/friends out a lot and I'm going to put them as my references. And I did go to school this past fall to learn a little about construction trades too.

Lying is a good way to be blacklisted and never work again.

You will end up working with some people who did work there--and they won't remember you. Also, from time to time, people will say something, and you'll have a blank expression. Those are pretty specific examples, but what are you going to do if, say, your supervisor did work or manage there--and it would just figure. I work with a guy who got fake credentials online and got himself a job in Nuclear Medicine as a currier. After awhile, it caught up with him. Just tell them you needed to take some time to do some exploratory studies and find out what you needed to do. This would have been better accomplished by not working a restaurant job. Besides that, they went ojut of business. Be honest. If you don't, it will catch up with you.

Lying is not a good idea! You never know who knows whom and maybe someone knows someone that worked at the resturant. During your down time perhaps you volunteered or working for a family member or were learning something (even if it was self taught), it's better to mention these activities as thing you did during your down time to show you were productive even if you weren't working during that time. That's a better option and perhaps closer to the truth???

I would't lie about working. Say something like you had to take care of an ill family member if that applies somewhat, you were broadening your experiences by traveling--if you traveled somewhere, or just say you took some time off to figure out what you wanted to do with your life, but that you are now ready to focus uninterupted on your career.
