What to send out to Afghanistan?

You might not want to send chocolates, there is the possibility of melting and mess. The other stuff is good. You might want to include baby wipes, the small portable type package. Jerky, powdered drink mix, like gatorade. Socks, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste. There aren't stores on every corner to pick the staples up. Puzzle books, movies... just about anything is good. Just watch for stuff that can melt or homemade that might get moldy :( before it gets to your brother.

I have nothing to do with the military, but it might be a cool idea to send something to laugh about with your package. Just something silly. It won't be of use, but it may give him a laugh. But don't let that be the only present. For my friends' birthday we usually give something idiotic (like a leather dominatrix costume, preferably something sexual and embarrassing) and a real present, like new shoes. Something special like a drawing or anything sounds good too. For found, watch out, since it's going to have to travel a long while some things can be a bit gross to send over. Pick something with an expiration date that's faaaar in the future, and that can't melt of go all sticky.

To add on to what coastie_mom said, there are ways to send food items that melt easily. Just google it and there are certain ways to pack it and containers to put them in that will work. When I was deployed my family and friends sent chocolate and home baked food all the time and it made it just fine except when they didn't pack it right.

Don't know how things work across the pond. However here in the states, we U.S soldiers always like chocolate chip cookies. Homemade cookies are always a big hit.
