California Concealed Carry Weapon Permit Process?
I am interested in home protection. A home invasion robbery happened nearby and has me contemplating my own security situation. I was convicted of several misdemeanor offenses involving driving without license, DUI in my early 20's. I'm 46 now and not had as much as a speeding ticket in over 15 years. I was also convicted of a felony(PC 32) 20 years ago, that was set aside by the courts, reduced to misdemeanor after successful completion of probation. I have never been arrested for a violent offense, what chance do I have of obtaining CCW for personal security?
Generally interested if my past prohibits me from obtaining CCW permit, or owning a firearm at all,is this something a citizen with my past should attempt myself, or hire an attorney to plead my case?

Generally speaking it's fairly difficult to get a CCW here in the People's Republic of California however in some counties the Sheriff is a bit more willing to sign you off than say in LA or San Francisco Counties.
I'm not sure how it works here in Ca with a set aside felony conviction. Honestly you might want to ask an attorney who's up on all those laws.

If you only want to protect your home I see no reason why you should carry a concealed weapon. However, here are the requirements.
There are typically three phases involved in the application process for obtaining a California permit to carry a concealed weapon.
The first phase involves the paper application. All issuing agencies…that is, your local county sheriff or the chief or head of your local municipal police department…require that you submit a uniform application to carry a concealed weapon in California.
Fees for the initial application or the renewal application may vary depending on the issuing agency but average between $100 and $200.
The second phase involves the interview process. This is when the issuing agency will discuss your need for the license, your criminal history, and the consequences of choosing to carry a concealed weapon. It is also when they will take your fingerprints. Some agencies may require a second interview.
The third phase does not apply to all counties / cities. This is the psychological evaluation. If conducted in your area, you will be required to undergo psychological testing. Your fee for this evaluation will not exceed $150.

It is nearly impossible for a civilian to get a concealed carry permit in NJ. You must go before a designated Superior Court Judge and prove that your life has been threatened. An armed guard can get a carry permit for work only.
