rms speed and temperature question?
If the rms speed of the molecules in an ideal gas at 60°C increases by a factor of two, what is the new temperature?
From my notes and sites online, it says I can calculate rms speed by taking the square root of the temperature. And to double the speed, you'd have to quadruple the temperature. Ok I did that but 360 is not the answer. So how should the new temperature be calculated?? I'm lost. help please! thanks
I've tried 240 too. Still says it's wrong :/
Sorry 360 was another number that I got trying to do it a different way.

You forgot that to do this you must measure all temperatures relative to absolute zero.
In other words use Kelvin.
60 C is 60 + 273.15 K
= 333 K
so to increase the speed by 2 you increase the energy by 4
and the temperature in Kelvin by 4
ie 1332 K
which converts back to 1059 C
