Can a breastfed baby 'recover' from one bottle of formula?
This is simply a curiosity as what's done is done and the baby - my oldest son - is now 4.5 years old! But when he was born we had feeding problems and at 4 days old the hospital gave him a bottle of formula. I didn't know then about the virgin gut and I wonder, was one bottle enough to ruin his gut flora, or not?
Most people really don't seem to understand the question, I find that strange. I am not demonising formula, but it's a fact that the gut flora of breastfed and formula fed infants are very different. I was simply trying to find out if my son's gut had been permanently altered by that one bottle.

Apparently it does alter it forever, according to a doctor who studied it. I will look for my source. Sorry I am terribly unorganized lol
Here is one in the meantime

Most people won;t know what you are talking about as you can see from the postings.
Update: I am having trouble finding the document as my old computer dies and of course I didn't back up the bookmarks. Dr Gordon does a good summary though. I would email a doctor that knows a lot about breastfeeding like Dr. Gordon, Dr. Newman and Dr. Sears.

I was worried about that too when nurses forced formula on my daughter when she was 10 minutes old. But everything I've read says that "it could take weeks for the gut to restore its balance" so I assume that means it does restore its balance after EBF for a while. My daughter hasn't had anything but breastmilk since that incident (5 months), and I like to think that her gut, while not technically "virgin" anymore, has had the good flora and mucus lining restored.
If you read the Dr. Jay Gordon link it says:
"If breast milk were again given exclusively, it would take 2-4 weeks for the intestinal environment to return again to a state favoring the grampositive flora. (Brown & Bosworth, 1922; Gerstley, Howell, Nagel, 1932)"
I studied nutrition in college and going off of what I know, gut flora is not static, it DOES change, even in adults. So there's no reason to think that the changes to the gut caused by formula supplementation would be permanent in an infant either.
I also read somewhere that it takes up to a month for the gut flora of an infant to be well established. So 1 formula supplement in that month is unlikely to cause a complete change, more just a temporary "hiccup".

Wtf? Formula isn't a poison. Of course he's fine. Is this question even for real?
Btw when you give your child antibiotics it completely destroys the gut flora. Does that mean when he gets sick you'll just let him die from an infection? Jeez.

No way! I was breastfeeding and didn't feel she was eating at all and gave my daughter some formula and she breast fed fine after that.
