What are atheists looking for in a forum called "religion and spirituality"?

Atheism is a gratifying sport.

My friends are happy atheists, but they are happier still, when they censure me for my faith.

There is a unique reward in condescension. Thats what brings them here. Agree?

Update:

Thanks for such diverse responses-

-Some are here "for a laugh",  "fun of poking" or " to make fun of the morons"(!)

-There are others who here to "rescue" theists as they have been saved from "stupidity"!

-Then there are some who are here to refresh the "good feeling" that they are no longer "stupid".

-A couple are here for answers.

...doesn't it seem that there are far too few among both atheists and theists who are here for a calm constructive debate -which cud only take place with an open mind, in some calm? Motive of most seems to be just to have "fun" while demonstrating "wisdom".

Well, I come here to receive wisdom from others' who stepped on, or off, the path of spirituality, but receive only wise cracks. Far too often its 'the pokes' and 'the reactions that poke'.

Shall we not pray to the atheists and to the God of theists - to help us see the benefit of calm

don't know about others, but I'm here to see atheists and christians argue. They are so funny, they make me laugh out loud by posting silly questions to start an argument.

"There is a unique reward in condescension. Thats what brings them here. Agree?"

That also brings most of the theists here too, ya know. The R&S section isn't a hangout for the religious, and free speech allows both sides to bash each other.

No Serene. I find gratification when I can rescue anyone from indoctrination and dogm that ruins their lives. Take a look at the lives that have been devastated by religion (I name christianity because that is the closest poison I know. Go to Ex-Christian.net and read testimonies of sincere hearts that gave their all to a belief and received religious abuse at the hands of their religious parents, pastors, youth pastors and leaders of their church and religion. Slap stick comments here in this forum by non-believers is nothing compared to what is really going on. Go and read...don't be afraid.

    11. A-theism is NOT a religion but it IS a valid religious position.

    12. The cats banned us from their section... cos we aren't cats(get it?).

    13. Coming here, always makes me feel smarter-saner than I really am.

    14. IF rational arguments worked on religious people there’d be no religious people.

    18. Kid, if you and your people didn't go to such extraordinary lengths to try to convince me and my people that all that imaginary little cosmic chappie stuff was anything more than primitive superstition, you and your people would probably never hear from me and my people... just saying.

    19. I come here to study the effects religious memes have on the minds they inhabit-control – it’s like a meme zoo.

    20. The atheist created everything and when everything became too scary he invented religious fantasies to hold FEAR of death at bay - he was here for the beginning - he'll be here for the end ;)

    21. George H.W. Bush: No, I don't know that Atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered as patriots. This is one nation under God.

    22. You'd have to wonder why I get TUs with this answer - I reckon I cover it all - obviously the fact I'm not afraid of imaginary monsters in de sky scares some people ;)

  • I like engaging in debate about religion. I find it fascinating. I also sometimes use this section as a basis for my psychology studies. It's interesting to see how the different religious states of people react to different statements.

Atheists are often deeply spiritual. If anything religion and spirituality are mutually exclusive. Religion is imposed from outside usually by threat or force. Spirituality arises naturally from within and in no way requires belief in a supreme being.

To show a large enough presence on the site to warrant an 'Ask an Atheist' section.

I first came here to look for information for a paper I was writing on Judeo-Christian Myths and their application in society of today. Then I started to answer questions aimed towards Atheist- and look, it has kept me here ever since.

I first came here to ask a question pertaining to my former christian beliefs. But then all i got was flak from both sides. Didn't hurt me much. I was just surprised, now i just come on here because it's the next best thing to Jerry Springer. JERRY!!! JERRY!!! JERRY!!!
