Custard without fancy gear?

Is there any way to make vanilla custard without fancy cooking gear, e.g., with just a microwave and a refrigerator? I like custard but I don't have fancy double boilers or a stove or anything.

I do have a rice cooker … could it make custard, given that it has some sort of temperature control in it (I think)?

You can make a double boiler with 2 pots. one large pot to boil the water (only about 1/4 filled) and a smaller one that will kinda sit in the larger one. Cover the whole thing with foil. That will work in a pinch.

Here is a microwave custard recipe

    BAKED CUSTARD (MICROWAVE)

    1 3/4 c. milk

    1/4 c. sugar

    3 eggs

    1/4 tsp. salt

    1 tsp. vanilla

    Nutmeg or cinnamon

Put milk in 1 quart bowl. Add eggs, sugar, salt and vanilla. Beat with electric mixer until smooth. Pour into five 6 oz. custard cups. Sprinkle with nutmeg or cinnamon. Arrange cups in circle in microwave oven. Cook on simmer (50% power) for 9 to 12 minutes. Remove each cup as it begins to bubble, and is almost set in center. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving. Serve warm or cold.

Here is a link to many many recipes that can be cooked in the rice cooker:

If you're talking a baked custard, no, can't be done. But if you mean a cornstarch or egg based one that would normally be done on a stovetop, you can do that. Involves putting it in the microwave for short periods, taking it out and stirring it, heating it again, and so on until it's cooked. Kind of fussy, but possible.
