Why do people use gender and sex interchangably?
When they're not the same thing? Is it that people really don't know the difference, or is it just that people think 'sex' is a dirty word?
@Nicola - You certainly seem to be right!
They are not the same thing. Your sex is determined by your body. Your gender is determined by your brain chemistry. Yes, most of the time the two match up, but not always. Transgendered people exist... saying that sex and gender are the same implies they don't.
@Beth - I take it you've never known a transgendered person, or you wouldn't be so offensive.

From my experience, they actually just don't know the difference. :)
I've never met anyone who thought 'sex' in that context was dirty... they just literally think Gender and Sex really are interchangeable.

The idea of gender (brain chemistry) being different from physical sex is a relatively new theory (yes, theory, not fact) and one not everyone believes in. Personally I think it's hogwash. If you have two X chromosome, you're female. If you have an X and a Y, you're male. End of story.

Sex is determined by biology; gender is a social construct.
Most people don't know the difference and it is apparently not taught. The dumbing down of the curriculum and all.

Sex and Gender, in that context mean the same thing. They both refer to being male or female.
However, sex makes babies as well, while I dont think anyone has ever had "gender" in order to get pregnant.

dictionary.com defines "gender" as
"sex:"
so yes they are interchangable and I'm curious as to why you think otherwise.
