Recommend a good true western?
I'd like to know the titles of good western movies that are true stories, have sharp attention to historical detail, and are suitable for family viewing (parents and tweens). Thanks.
@Robert and Steve - I love The Searchers and True Grit, but they were both based on novels and not especially true to their period settings. I'm looking for movies that give an accurate impression of the old west - very rare in Hollywood.
@ Ram - That's a nice list of classic westerns, but it doesn't help me. Only Tombstone and Assassination are based on true events, and they are both rated R. Maybe no movie that depicts the true history of the American west in a realistic way can get a PG-13 rating, so maybe I'm on a wild goose chase. Thanks for the effort though.
@ Roberta Lee - "Son of the Morning Star" seems to fit the bill. Good reviews. True events. Very few mistakes found by the imdb crowd. And a PG-13 rating. I look forward to watching this one. Thanks.
@Pepere Eldridge - It's not at all weird that you couldn't find a historically accurate western movie. Hollywood westerns grew out of the tradition of western pulp novels that are notoriously inaccurate. The reason I posted this question was because I was having so much trouble finding a good true to life film that would give me what I was looking for - a window into the wild west, not a just wild west theme park.
@ Dances - "The Ballad of Little Jo" looks to be a likely candidate, but the R rating is off-putting. I might allow it for my daughter after previewing it first. I'm pleased that the lead is a woman.

In my experience, few people are aware of the very good film, "The Ballad of Little Jo" (1993), said to be "inspired" by a real woman.
Can't comment on how historically accurate it is, other than it seemed accurate enough to me.
Also, if you're looking for typical Western action, you may be disappointed.
I would definitely characterize this much more of a bio-drama than "shoot 'em up."
Far as family viewing suitably, there is attempted rape and some topless nudity, if that is an issue for you.
Trivia: the lead actress later played Rose's adult grand-daughter from Titanic.
It also features Ian McKellan (Gandolf from Lord of the Rings).

I too value movies being historically accurate. "Broken Trail" starts out in eastern Oregon in the late 19th century. Actor Thomas Church captures the cowboy look as well as anyone I have ever seen. The culture of that time and place is very well captured as well at the technology of that time. Get it in blue-ray as the photography of the western trail will delight all your senses.
"Son of the Morning Star" is about events that eventually result in the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

The new True Grit is pretty much the mst historically acurate wetsern I have ever seen, right down to the way they speek, which might be offputting to some at first.
