"The most valuable of yoga postures is to stand unshaken in calm inner serenity amidst the crash of breaking worlds." - Paramahansa Yogananda
Have come across the vertex form written two ways: f(x)=a(x-h)^2+k and a(x+d)^2+e?
Whether one uses (h,k) or (d,e) seems a matter of choice, but the negative within parentheses versus the positive in second seems a significant difference. Are they both equally valid? If so, when use one versus the other?
3 AntwortenMathematicsvor 4 JahrenAncient story about not killing out of emotion?
Anyone know the source of this story: a city/palace guard is chasing a thief for many days. After weeks of effort, he finally corners the thief. As the guard moves in, I think the thief spits in his face (or something). The guard suddenly backs down and starts to leave. The thief asks, "Why aren t you going to kill me?" The guard says simply, "Because you made me angry."

6 AntwortenVegetarian & Veganvor 6 JahrenFactoring problem; what am I overlooking?
m^2 - n^2 - 4m - 4n / 2m - 2n - 8 .
For the numerator, factoring by grouping yields: (m+n)(m-n) - 4 (m+n).
For denominator: 2(m-n-4).
Now I'm stuck.
The book gives correct answer, but I can't see how they get it.
Thanks
1 AntwortMathematicsvor 7 JahrenAnyone familiar with writings of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin?
Am searching for source of something a friend attributes to Teilhard de Chardin.
Apparently Teilhard wrote that at some future point in human culture/society, things will become so bad (crime, war, etc) that the only positive thing left will be to love one another.
Would like to find the complete essay or chapter this came from.
Thanks

"Comes" sounds more familiar (therefore correct), but that alone is not a reliable criteria.

A man who has a vehicle for hire (automobile taxi or perhaps rick-shaw) regularly delivers a prostitute to a hotel where she meets her clients. He gradually becomes infatuated with her and finally saves up enough money to hire her for himself. However, instead of having sex, he lets her rest the entire night, while he watches over her while she sleeps.

2 AntwortenCyclingvor 10 JahrenLearning to write Arabic abjad?
I was searching web (via Google) for a site that would show how to write Arabic letters.
Specifically, where the writer should start letter stroke; when (and if) the pen is ever lifted to continue a given letter; etc.
Remember, this is being asked by someone who has zero previous knowledge of abjad. It was a small revelation to me just to learn it is written right to left.
If there are no sites showing this, are their perhaps children books/primers?
(it would be great if any written for English speaker/writers).
Many thanks.

3 AntwortenBoard Gamesvor 1 JahrzehntLight/dark points on backgammon board?
On a chess board, correct play is to orientate board so that a black square is in player's lower left (thus white square lower right).
Most, but not all, backgammon boards I've seen, have the one-point as white/light (and 24-point is black/dark).
Is there an established convention as to what is correct for a backgammon board?
