Army Combatives.. useful or a waste of time and resourses?
I am currently in the level 2 combatives class. I just don't see the reason for combatives, except it looks good on your records for promotion. I mean, if you are off the FOB, without your weapon or anything you could use for a weapon, by yourself and get jumped by the enemy, who by the way doesn't have a weapon either, then your combative skills. We sent two Soldiers to the hospital so far this week from our class. One I know is getting surgery on his leg and will be out of action for months, then probably on a permanent profile.
Is combatives worth the cost?
How so?

Currently I am the master combatives Trainer at Fort Campbell KY. I have over 300 documented cases of our soldiers using hand to hand techniques you are learning right now. Dont assume that your weapon will always work, nor assume that every scenario gives you the freedom to shoot on sight. It is worth the cost for several reasons.
1. There are over 2000 cases of documented hand to hand combat scenarios
2. It builds the warrior ethos.
3. It develops unit espirit de corp
4. It builds ones own self confidence
5. There are a lot of soldiers entering the military who have never been in a fist fight let alone a gun fight that are stacking on doors in foreign countries. Combatives helps to bridge that gap.

I am not familiar with what they teach in Army Combatives, but I assume it is basic unarmed combat skills.
During my Air Force years I took one course in which an unarmed combat techniques class was part of the curriculum. It was stressed that this was a familiarization program and that if we wanted to really know how to handle ourselves in unarmed combat we should enroll in some sort of martial arts program which taught true defensive skills. Safety was stressed in this program and nobody got hurt.
If they are truly teaching you combat skills the risk of hurting someone is an acceptable cost, in the eyes of those in command. It is also an unfortunate risk. If they are putting you at risk without teaching you anything you can actually use, then it is--as you suggest--a waste of time and resources.
