Deployment before retiering from the Army?

We have a little over a year left in the Army,my Husband wanted to retire next year February. Now His Unit is deploying soon, does that mean he has to stay in the Army longer now or will he have enough time to do the retirement process when he returns? Thank you

Your husband can put in his retirement papers while he is deployed so that all the wheels are in motion when he returns. But most units would say he is a prime candidate for rear detachment commander or rear detachment NCOIC depending on his position. It may also be that your husband wants to make this last deployment.

Hmmm, well I don't have personal experience with this. However, my neighbor just left for a deployment and he has 13 months until retirement of his army career. They just postponed his retirement until he gets back from the deployment. I do think there is loop holes in this, so I would check with someone like jag or something along those lines. Just to see what his options are and what he is willing to do. My hubby just got back from a deployment 3 months ago, so I know all to well how that is. Especially with you two, he has to have some sort of time to figure out plans for what's going to go on after he retires. Which I think they give so many days for that as well, where he still gets his regular base pay and bah until those days are up so there is some kind of stability there. However if he does deploy again, y'all save more money for his retirement but at such a high price which is being away from one another and the risk for his safety. I hope this helps. God bless you, from one military wife to the next.

You can put in Retirement paperwork (basically an notice of intent to retire) up to 18 months out. By law a Retiring person is authorized to begin ACAP then....

if the deployment is over his retirement date, some units won't even send him. many units have stopped stop loss. but he may just end up doing his deployment and then getting out.

    Maybe , maybe not.

They can still stop loss you, especially if your senior enough to be retiring.

But they are also starting to send people back early from deployments, to ETS or retire.

IE: they deploy you, but send you back 90 prior to your ETS or retirement.
