Anxiety symptoms any advice?
My Son (17) is suffering from anxiety symptoms (tongue anxiety, breathing, dizzyness) since April. He is going to therapy and taking alternative medicine (St. Johns wort, Valerian) but it doesn't seem to help much. What else can we do? Any advice or experience?

its great that u are looking for answers for your son..
i too deal with anxiety.. that can get pretty bad sometimes.
over the years i have begun learning some coping methods and tips to lower my anxiety.
one thing you can do for your son is get him an electric tea pot. (no joke)
he can take it to college. and whenever he feels anxious.. he should make himself a cup of hot caffiene-free tea (very important that it has no caffiene).
peppermint is great. and u can also try this brand called yogi tea.
the peppermint tea will make most of his physical symptoms subside without giving him the jitters like coffee does.
you should also explain to him that its important to limit his sugar intake.
i am seeing a CBT therapist right now in manhatten.. paying about 175 per session.. and my therapist says that its so important to have a proper sleep schedule and eating healthier.
whatever you do.. do not overwhelm him with things he has to do but..
just mention it to him when he is relaxed. make sure he is taking an organic vitamin..and a fish oil tablet every day.

u can get it at whole foods. also make sure that he has short and long term goals..
find out whats going on with him.. ask him some questions..
to see what are some of the surface problems.
if you can make him feel like most of his problems will be taken care of.. you will lift a heavy weight off his chest.
if he feels he has too much work.. talk to him about getting a tutor.
if he's socially anxious. maybe get him a book on social anxiety..
but the main thing to do..
in general .. is to always give him positive feedback..
if say.. his anxiety is present during social situations..
and you see if strike up a conversation with a stranger..
tell him he's done a great job.. and just give him many sincere compliments..
whatever you do.. try to lower his anxiety by talking in a soft voice.. cooking healthy foods.. giving him positive feedback.. and reassuring him that ... everything will be ok..
anxiety disorders.. mean that most of our anxiety is irrational.
if we learn to calm our racing thoughts we can learn to lower our anxiety.
also... the best tip i can give u.. is distract him with many enjoyable projects.. so he can learn what it feels like to spend time away from feeling anxious and learn to enjoy life again.
find out what is interests are and go with that.
maybe he like art, or fitness or yoga.
maybe theres a class he can go to..
ya know.. keep trying different things and see what works.
he has all the answers .. no amount of money or books or anything can really fix this problem.. only relaxation.. deep breathing..a calm attitude and time.
nothing will change overnight..
give him time.. and u will see results.
stay hopeful.. and he will definitely get through this.

Sounds like anxiety. Better take her to a doctor. I wonder if it's cycle related. My anxiety and depression got a lot worse as soon as my hormones started kicking in. Contraceptives helped and prozac and other antidpressants made me feel a lot worse like being depressed was awesome compared to being depressed and on medication. If the doctor puts your daughter on meds, do listen to her if she says she hates the medication!

5htp is a good one for depression so maybe it would work for anxiety? I don't know for sure but it's not a prescription.

I was prescribed Xanax for my anxiety...they have vallium...trazadone...all kinds of things you can take for anxiety i would talk to his doctor. sometimes alternative medicine isn't the best thing.
