Ever had a root canal? How long did it take?

I just had my 4th or 5th root canal done and it took me only half an hour just like it did last time and it once again didn't hurt at all. I suffered 3 days of excruciating, throbbing pain and now it's finally gone =]

I once had a root canal at another dentist and it took 1 and a half hours and it hurt during and after the root canal. Why?

Haha I just love my dentist. She does a great job working on my mouth, it never hurts, and you can always chat with her.

Root canals definitely can vary in how long they take to complete. There are many factors, such as which tooth (different teeth have different numbers of canals), location (front is in general easier to treat than those in the back), how curved the canals are, the size of the canals, how far the patient can open his/her mouth, how long i takes to get the tooth numb, etc.

Like you said, a front tooth can be done in say 30 min, while a molar in back may take 2-3 hours or multiple visits.

As for why sometimes they hurt afterwards, see the first paragraph. There are many factors.

A root canal can take a long time if the Dentist is is having difficulty finding the nerves. Its also possible you had a bad infection and the pain killers were not effective.
