Will my mom be able to control which college I go to?

I know I'm not going to college any time soon, but my mom and I were just talking about it. She wants me to go to a college in Virginia, were I live right now, but I want to try for a college out of state. I don't think it's anything about a college here being better, especially because she's never been to college. I'm pretty sure she just wants me close. I'll probably be getting a scholarship, and I might have my own house. If I am supporting myself and 18, is there any way that she can control which college I go to?

If you can pay for everything--your tuition, your house, your living expenses--then no, your mom has no control over where you go. You are 18, so you are legally an adult--once you turn 18, your parents have no control over you.

It would, of course, upset her, and if you don't want to cause a rift, you *could* look at some schools in Virginia. There are very prestigious schools there: UVA, William & Mary, and Washington & Lee.

If you can get a scholarship to a certain school, then you can go wherever you like. Now, if your mom is paying for your college, then I think you are going to have a difficult time convincing her otherwise.
