Somali Pirates...Isn't it time that the US deploy "Q Ships" again, just like in World War II?
In the Second World War the United States and England deployed "Q Ships" which were armed cargo ships with the canons hidden from view. They looked like innocent merchantmen steamers. When spotted and attacked by German submarines, the disguises were thrown to the side and the guns began blazing away to try and sink the enemy submarines.
Somali Pirates are attacking innocent cargo ships with a total lack of fear and caution. I think it is time for nations of the world to return to the Q Ship philosophy and blow the Somali Pirates out of the water. What do you think?

In World War 2, the merchant ships were torpedoed and sunk. This is a simple case of war.
The pirates have not, and don't want to sink any ships. They only want to hold them for ransom. This is a simple case of robbery and kidnapping.
If the pirates started to sink these ships, then you would see the merchants arm themselves and the Navy start attacking them.

No. This calls for a peaceful solution. Deploying more ships to the Horn of Africa will only raise tensions. We have enough on our plate, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, North Korea. The United Nations, Arab League and the Organization of African States will handle the Piracy Question.

Even though Somalia has no real government, it is tantamount to a declaration of war, and we WERE at war in WW II. It's a little more delicate than that, and all the countries would have to agree to do it. I agree with US and French response--no ransom.
PS Those would be useless against the small boats the pirates use.

Most businesses have some kind of security.
On multimillion dollar cargo ship, you'd think they would spend a few bucks for security.
Penny wise and pound foolish.

30,000 ships go through the gulf of Aden each year. 50 successful pirate attacks. It's a non-issue. We should accept it, just as we seemingly accept that 50,000 people die from car crashes each year.

Yes, that is an excellent idea. Often the answers to problems of today can be found in the past, it worked then and it will work now.

I would gladly come out of retirement to blow up those pirates.
