What is the US Navy doing about the Somali Pirates?

Question

With the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union, there ought to be a surplus of US Navy Frigates and Submarines sitting around somewhere. Why can't we activate some of those to curise up and down the Somali Coast and eliminate the Somali Pirate threat from the world shipping community? Certainly the US Navy can contribute something to this global problem. When will this happen?

It's not the job of the US Navy to act on a whim. They haven't been asked and are not likely to be. After all, then the US would be accused of over reacting, butting in where it isn't wanted or some other form of B.S. This is a matter of security in a private organization.

First of all, when operating in Somali waters, we technically can do nothing about it (it is an act of war) according to international law. The pirates know this and very much operate in Somali territorial waters. Also, keep in mind, the Navy has less than 300 Ships, and they are stretched thin fighting two wars. But, when presented, there have been numerous engagements so far with the Navy and the pirates in that region. Just right now, it's not a major national security threat.

We are the UNITED STATES Navy, not the WORLD Navy. Our responsibility is to protect US against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Our responsibility is NOT to be the police men of the world....

This doesn't fall into the jurisdiction of the US NAVY. It's a matter of corporate security. It's the duty of these corporations to secure the passage of their cargo, not the military. The US Navy has it's own worries.
