What is an Atheist?

I love this question. We get it about 13 times a week.

I love reading the answers from theist and Atheist alike. The Atheists give simple, logical answers; while the theists all compare Atheists to the anti-Christ.

Same thing every time

Atheist means someone who does not believe in God. To some it is believing there is not a God while to others it is the absence of belief.

You don't 'qualify' as an atheist - there's no test, or doctrine. It is a personal position that some people take.

Please don't confuse the atheism of the individual with repressive regimes like Communism that actively persecute any form of religion. These regimes claim they are atheist but in forcing others to conform to a state where religion plays no part, they are more anti-theist than anything.

It means someone who does not believe in gods.

Atheists who say they don't believe in God, rather than all gods are likely just ignorant to the fact that there are other religions with other gods. I wouldn't hold it against them though, or consider them any less of an atheist.

An atheist CAN still have other beliefs, even about other supernatural things, it is purely the lack of belief in deities that defines them as atheists.

Not believing/following any religion usually follows from that, although there are a few exceptions (some Buddhists are atheists, for example). Many atheists also don't believe in any supernatural phenomena, but again, there are a few exceptions.

We're not a club. We don't have any bylaws or doctrines, no creed, no brochure. If you don't believe in god(s), then you can call yourself an atheist if you want. That's all there is to it.

An atheist is a person that feels only good about itself when professing God doesn't exist.....ONLINE only at RS only Never out on the street. I've never met an atheist on the street ever. And everyone knows I'm a Christain because I tell them I am here and on the street. Theres more Christains on the street than any one atheist. Atheists are afraid by themselves on the street, Just like a gang member, alone they are nobody in a group they are Rulers.

All Atheist means Is 'without a god'. We do not believe In god or gods of any type and most of us do not follow a religion.

My self, I do not believe In any god type figure or follow any religion. As some one else said on Answers Atheists are

Atheists dont believe in god; Agnostics are unsure whether or not a god can exist. These go into different categories though;

theres a strong atheist - which says theres absolutely no way a god can exist

a weak atheist - doesnt have enough evidence to prove a god

an agnostic atheist - doesnt know whether or not a god can exist, but choses to believe there isnt one

First of all, it's not capitalized. That's just a minor thing I wanted to point out.

Second, atheism is a rejection of the belief in god/gods. That's all. Nothing else to it. There is no other aspect besides that. You can't "practice" atheism, it's not a religion(you will innevitably hear some Christian claim that) and any other opinions held by someone that is an atheist is unrelated to his atheism itself.

No belief in god/gods. That's it. Nothing else.

atheism-a way of life without the belief in god, or gods. Not a religion. Just another term that describes an atheist
