Personal gain?

Why do so many so-called Wiccans believe that spells cannot be done for personal gain? Is it because the tv show Charmed says so? Is that all your research has really taught you - that you should believe in Hollywood's version of Wicca and Witchcraft? Every time I perform a ritual or do spell work, I gain something from it. It may be a closer connection to Divinity or an improved state of being.

Update:

Sadhara - we aren't "creating" energy. We use energy.

Update 2:

Midnight - how is personal gain associated with karma? That's like saying you refuse to eat food because it might deprive someone else of it.

Yes, I believe the "personal gain" rule came from Charmed. That's the only place I've ever seen that "rule." The popularity of this rule is an unfortunate indicator of the number of people who don't look beyond a TV show for their so-called spirituality, and clearly are not studying anything that even remotely resembles even a liberal definition of Wicca.

I am a Ceremonial Magickian and an Alchemist. I have lived by the idea that it is hard to do your True Will if you are starving. It may also be some sort of left over from a Christian upbringing. "If I only do good things, then only good things will happen..." That then gets wrapped mysteriously in the Wiccan reed and they are just lost in the concepts.

I make no value judgements on magick. I work with whatever entities I need to for the appropriate changes in my own universe. Though if I had a dime for every 16 year old who wanted to know how to bring up one of the Goetia for some sort of borrowed power, Thamateurgy would not be necessary. Borrowed power does not end well because most people are borrowing it to interfer in someone elses life and Will. That DOES have ramifications but not in ways that those claiming only to do this or that flavor of magick will easily understand. So I try to disabuse them of the color coding and just move on with my universe.

    Enjoy your universe!

For me it is my darn Christian up bringing. I have cast a spell or two for money and I always feel guilty for it. Although every Christian church that I have attended requested 10% as tithing. Go figure? I do need the money for my move at the end of this month to Washington state. I spent all of my stash cash on the trip to Sedona. The ones I have done in the past have worked but only small amounts of money have come my way. I could use a few hundred this time. Know any good ones? Peace&Love be with you... ~M~

I never got round to seeing Charmed, reviews from peers weren't good, but I ought to watch it to see what all the fuss is about. Hollywood and the media in general has certainly spread plenty of nonsense regarding Witchcraft, but that's what you get for people not doing their own research. Happens in all areas. Within Wicca it really all depends on the FQ (Fluff Quotient).

Very good point. I've always wondered that myself. Why it is that they think doing a spell to make even a friend better would not be personal gain. I think it's a part of them not being realistic. I mean, you gotta think, they are saying you can do no harm, which includes if someone hurts/kills someone you care about. And if you think that that is the exception then don't you think they would have said that was the exception?

I do not believe that you can not do spells for personal gain. That is fluffy talk.

Honestly do you think that the witches of old, before all the Wicca new agey stuff came into being worried about three fold laws and personal gain? A personal code of ethics was all they used to guide them.

all right placed, i could no longer have pronounced what you probably did, from now on suited. there is not any place interior the rede or the different wiccan ethics that states that spells can't be finished for inner maximum benefit. We Witches are no longer right here to service different persons. now and lower back we too want help, and don't have the luxurious of yet another witch around to solid the spell for us. now and lower back we could desire to constantly do it ourselves. and how the rede is worded, makes for misinterpretation anyhow, that's why i do no longer shop on with the rede. some take it actually, and others take it as metaphoric. it truly is complicated, so i do no longer shop on with it in any respect. fairly for the occasion you presented. Steping on a trojan horse as you walk consititutes harm, so how are we meant to no longer harm something whilst it happens regardless of how difficult we attempt to no longer.

I don't think it's so much being against personal gain. As the creed states. "When you have a true need. Harken not to others greed." Meaning you should only ask that which you truly need. You may think you need a money when a job would serve you better.

I am not Wiccan but I agree. Some of the rituals that I do are for Personal Gain. I am not talking about for to win the lottery, (although if I knew how to do that I would, no bones about it) but for help in little ways, or guidence.

    Blessings

They can certainly be done for personal gain...I think what they're trying to warn against is those who would profit from other people's misery....don't take advantage of others.
