Are Eurpean refrgerators really small?
When watching British Sitcoms here in the USA I'm always struck by the fact that the families always seem to have a refrigerator the size of one used in a Dorm Room. Do Europeans really use refrigerators that small and not like the 6 foot tall ones we use?

I've got a full sized fridge which is about 5' tall and 60cm wide. Many UK fridges are the same width (this is a UK standard width for all kitchen appliances so that they fit into spaces underneath the kitchen worktop) but about half the height so that they fit under the worktop. My freezer is like that. You can get big American fridges, but you have to bare in mind that we have far less land than in the USA and so our houses are a lot smaller. Also most of our houses are at least 100 years old and several are far older than that so weren't designed with modern appliances in mind!

European, Japanese and Asian fridges are usually smaller than American ones, but not usually as small as a dorm room sized.
They buy food in less quantity and fresher. Also, they have different electric voltage that won't power a big fridge and the electric bills would be too high.
Some rich people in Europe have big fridges.

I'm an Australian who is a frequent visitor to the UK and who is constantly amazed by the size of the refrigerators in family homes. They are so tiny!!
But then again, the Brits do put their washing machines and clothes dryers in the kitchen instead of in a seperate laundry and put a plastic tub in their stainless steel sinks to do the washing up in. Weird.

Depends on the Family's budget and size of kitchen. I got a duck egg blue color 50's style fridge, it's about 6ft and pretty wide.
A lot of folks these days are buying the big American style fridges but they are expensive compared to the usual sizes...

Yep, mostly - cos they're cheap and most British houses are small crappy ones with limited space. They're manufactured to fit in the same area as washing machines and tumble driers, to slot into smaller fitted kitchens wherever there's space. Also, they fit comfortably in single rooms of shared rented accommodation which is common in this country. Bigger houses tend to have bigger fridges, mine is huge I'm happy to say.

Yes - most UK fridges are small - to go under a worktop. We can get the big ones you have in the US, but our kitchens do not really cater for the bigger size. Also our climate is not as hot as yours, so we don't need such big fridges.

Mine is about 6 foot, but it doesn't shoot ice cubes at you or resemble a walk in wardrobe (Wales UK)
