Gays can serve in the armed forces, but not openly. They must conceal their sexuality.
"Don't ask, don't tell" (or "don't ask, don't tell, don't harrass, don't pursue") is the common term for the U.S. military policy which implements Pub.L. 103-160. The policy prohibits anyone who has sexual bodily or romantic contact with a person of the same sex from serving in the armed forces of the United States, and prohibits any homosexual or bisexual from disclosing his or her sexual orientation, or from speaking about any homosexual relationships, including marriages or other familial attributes, while serving in the United States armed forces. The policy also requires that as long as gay or bisexual men and women in the military hide their sexual orientation, commanders are not allowed to investigate their sexuality.
It was introduced as a compromise measure in 1993 by President Bill Clinton who, while campaigning for the Presidency, had promised to allow all citizens regardless of sexual orientation to serve openly in the military, a departure from the then complete ban on those who are not heterosexual. The actual policy was crafted by Colin Powell and has been maintained by Clinton's successor, George W. Bush.
In short, it means to mind your own damn business, and act in a professional manner. Men, Women, Gays, Straights, Black, White; all of these people (and more) can make fine soldiers & warriors. I don't care about any of that about the person next to me in the fighting trench; I only care that he or she is a professional warrior and will get the job done. Prove that you can do that, and I don't care if you're a purple skinned transexual from Alpha Centauri.

RE:
Are gays allowed in the US Armed Forces?

There have been gays in the military of all countries for thousands of years. Many have fought courageously. Many have been top performers, event today. Are TOE SUCKERS, S&M adherants, FOOT FETISHISTS, PORNO FREAKS allowed in? YUP. So why not gays?
In my over 20 years in the military, I've been stationed with many gays....homosexual/lesbians...and all that I knew to be gay were top performers. I even knew a U.S. Marine who was up for orders for duty with the Commandant of the Marine Corps until some nosey witch found some pictures and letters from her gf and turned the Sarge in for being a lesbian.
I often wonder what nasty bit of info we'd find if we looked into the lives of the gay bashers in the military.

I guess and I believe gays are still accepted in the Armed Forces however they do something special. They maybe placed in the Medic Unit so as to care for the wounded especially during war.

Ever hear of the phrase "Don't ask, Don't tell", keep it to yourself, even if you are looking for a boyfriend.
I am sure you can find a boyfriend other than by joining the military.
I personally don't have anything against gays, but I wouldn't want you in the same room or foxhole.

I'm surprised conservatives haven't started actively recruiting homosexuals for their Commander in Chief into the military straight for the front line deployment trumpeting it for the ''few and proud''. They could kill (pun intended) 2 birds with 1 stone: Seeming more "human rights-ish" while getting rid of more gays.

I didn't think they were but according to law under the 'don't ask, dont tell' law they are allowed. I believe this law was instituted during the Clinton Administration.

The policy is still to disallow enlistment to gays, but recruiters are not allowed to ask. If they find out though, it's a no-go.

Yes, that was Hillary's first initiative when those people were in the white house. Don't ask, don't tell.

yes under the current "don't ask don't tell and recently added don't pursue. I'm not sure what the last one means.
