Is "atheism" really a "sin"?

Only religious people believe in "sin," as you describe it. Obviously, if you are an atheist, sin doesn't apply to you, and neither do any of the other bizarre beliefs so typical of religions. Your main question doesn't really make sense. Atheism is a sin if you are a religious person. Ostensibly, sin doesn't affect atheists, and atheists don't "sin," since sinning only exists in a religious context.

I don't have that much faith. It is much more plausible and easier to believe that God is behind it all.

Your friend is correct. What is considered 'sin,' is what is determined by particular religions. There is Universal Law. It is believed that most people are aware of what is acceptable as morally right or wrong. You can be a Secular Humanist and have a strong sense of how other humans should be treated. Being an atheist,does not mean that one is absolved from following good, ethical behaviour towards his fellow human beings.

what your friend is really getting at is vocabulary. Okay, it isn't a 'sin'-because that's a 'believer's' term. Instead-if you check out all the possible 'sins'-they're usually 'stupid', or 'selfish', or unethical, or just plain 'mean'. All these apply to humans. Unless he wants to consider himself a naked ape, in which case he can eat the brain of another without regret. Atheism a sin?-not for the atheist...it's just plain shortsighted.

Christians will try to scare Athiests like myself with the old "you're going to suffer needlessly for believing this, why not just take the safe path and not risk any chance of hell"?

If you aren't Christian, why worry about what they think is sinful?

They 'suffer' from sin because they want to believe in it.

If you actually know in your heart that God does exist, but pretend otherwise, then it is the worst of sins.
