Is the patriot Act still Legal?

The Patroit Act, is it still law in the US I heard somewhere it didn't get renewed when brought up for it, but it did get a extension by The President. I'm not American and don't know about this, and probably shouldn't care but I do.

The original act that was introduced after 9/11 was due to expire on 31/12/05. It was extended until March 06. On the 02/03/06 it was passed by the Senate, and on the 07/03/06 it was passed by the full House of Representatives. It was signed back into law by GW Bush on 08/03/06. The majority in favour of this act has fallen substantially since 2001, as more and more Americans realise that their civil liberties are being eroded. A recent gallop poll shows that over 60% now feel this way, and 90% are not fully conversant with the Act. Hope this helps. [p.s. I"m British, not American]

The way the patriot act has been used to limit american freedoms is still in question in the courts. I know the first time around, a federal judge ruled the way the administration carried out the NSA domestic wiretapping program to be illegal...in other words, the wiretapping is fine with a warrant, but the warrantless searches are illeagl and unconstitutional. Bush has vowed to appeal...we are still waiting to see what the oputcome will be, or if it will be carried all of the way to the supreme court. And then things will get very interesting, based on the fact that Bush has appointees on the court. And you should care. AMerica needs to hold itself to this higher standard of protecting freedoms, so we don't look like hypocrites to the rest of the world, and we will have an easier time selling this ideal of democracy to unstable areas of the world. The success of democracy DEPENDS on the US upholding it.

It is, unfortunately, still the law. It's an UNCONSTITUTIONAL law, but that's another matter.

It did get renewed, for another limited period, by Congress - the President does not have the legal right to pass or extend a law under our system of government. Unfortunately, the Congress right now is majority Republican, the same party as Bush, and therefore tends to vote for whatever he wants. With any luck, that will be changing before the year is out.

The Patriot Act was NEVER legal. Congress is not allowed to make laws that violate any part of the Constitution. It is, however, still law as it was renewed and has yet to be overturned on judicial appeal.

It's unconstitutional, Habeas Corpus is all that protects us from a tyrant alá hitler to put a group of unfavorables in prison camps (and yes they do exist, there might be one nearby you).

Unfavorables like "enemy combatants" can be anyone that questions the Bush administration and the official 9/11 "theory".

The Patriot Act has actually just been extended, and is currently in full effect, with no real end in sight.

That information is classified. You are not allowed to know whether it is legal or illegal, for security reasons.
