What would be the best way to prepare for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)?
I have a Master of Social Work degree and I want to have the chance to earn a PhD in this field.

1. Go to a bookstore and buy a GRE practice book with an accompanying CD software (by three if you can afford it). Take a full length exam (do it as though it were the real thing) - remember that the exams are all computer-based and the exam self-adjusts its difficulty to how many you get right.
2. Tally your score and look at where you are weakest.
3. Spend 2-3 weeks improving on that weakness.
4. Take a quiz that tests specifically for that weakness. If you improve to your satisfaction, move on to the next weakness, if not, change your study habit for the next 2-3 weeks and take the quiz again. Repeat until you improve on every weakness to your satisfaction.
5. Every month you must take another exam to test if your study is improving your score.
6. In 6months you should be ready for the actual test.
*Note: PhD granting institutions are starved for applicants/candidates, the GRE may not matter if you're going to an average institution. The GRE will matter if you're trying to get into a competitive school where number of applicants is very high relative to how many they accept.
Good luck!

guy, I took the GRE 2 years in the past and that i do not care how a lot you study or what you study, there is not some thing you should do about the verbal section. it really is actual variety of ridiculous. I did each and every of the practice questions in my Kaplan e book, discovered the definitions of each and every of the two hundred words on the lower back, alongside with roots and origins, and nevertheless did not comprehend ninety% of the words on that attempt. All of my factors got here from the interpreting Comprehension and Sentence crowning glory sections. It changed into variety of stupid, fairly. i imagine i ended up with a 550, which isn't terrible, yet I had a 6 (proper score) in Analytical Writing so i imagine there is a few thing thoroughly incorrect with the Verbal section. i wager that would not help you a lot, although. Sorry. i'd merely say save reading each and every question and word you'll get your fingers on and be prepared to not do properly -- do not enable it get you flustered.

The best preparation is to familiarize yourself with the exam by reading about all the rules and formatting of the exam that you will be taking. It's also very helpful to take practice exams twice or three times per week for the two or three months before the exam. When you receive your practice test score, you can more reliably diagnose your problem areas and work to resolve them. Plus, if you take practice exams, you may even see exact questions repeated on the actual exam.
Good luck with your PhD application process. Despite the hard work, discipline, and brain-drain, it's a very rewarding accomplishment.

I bought a GRE study manual and read a chapter a day and studied the practice questions. Make sure you get a guide with software. The practice tests are very beneficial plus you get a pretty good feeling on how well you will score. Good Luck.
They are pretty expesive you might want to try a used book store or ebay first. Again make sure the software is included when you do this
