Free Speech as an excuse?

CherryToppings posted a topic regarding racism (see link: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AunZU... ) and got an answer regarding the right to have a 'Free Speech'. If expressing yourself in a racist way is within the definition of 'Free Speech' (which i personally doubt!!!) and it is tolerated by the U.S. government, who allowed (and still allows) skinheads, neu-nazi parties and the KKK, why do european countries that were involved in the holocaust (especially germany, austria and italy) still have to pay reparation to jewish people in the U.S.? When will the U.S. start paying reparation to native americans, afro-americans and americans from asian origin for extinction, slavery and inhumanity? What's going on in Guantanamo Bay? Is this also Free Speech?

Update:

hmmm... guess some of you got me wrong. Propably it's because english is not my native language and i used the wrong words. My posting is not meant to be anti-semitic, not meant to offend people and question Free Speech. What the Nazi regime did during World War II is INDISCUSSABLE - there's no doubt about it! CherryTopping asked what racists really want and one answerer responded by telling her that in the US there is a so-called Free Speech. I just find it contradictory that when it comes to holocaust every one squalls but when it comes to nowadays racism some people hide behind Free Speech... That's why I added my posting...

    I get what your saying...

Basically the U.S. is full of hypocrytes that expect all of the governments who were or are racist pay the victims but they don't pay the victims of their own racism!?!?!?!?

so what is your question? when will the U.S. begin repaying reparation to these people? whilst what happened to all these "minority" groups is horrible, none are extinct (except for many native American tribes). there are still afro-americans, mexican-americans, chinese-americans that have survived those tumultuous times. I strongly agree with your point. However, we live in a country run by other people who we choose to make the laws (a republic). and the way things have been run for the past 230 years, they will not be getting any better for the citizens of this country any time soon. I understand the frustration. How can we call ourselves such a great country when there are so many things going terribly wrong as far as Justice is concerned. I feel for the people that had to suffer such atrocities, but all we can do as a nation is either agree with what is happening and not do nothing (not voting, which = not having a voice) or changing the system slowly but surely. Revolt? sure why not. Many people before us did it. we have many people in this nation who are upset with the way this country is being run. I have no problem in dying for a cause that I believe in. no problem whatsoever.

Other countries do not have have the same free speech rights that the USA does. Germany, in particular, had a particular issue in world aggression TWICE, and may bear some special responsibility there, although any reparations should be fading to zero at this point.

The US/native american was appropriate in its time, as the aggression during WWI and WWII was not. Ditto with slavery.

Guantanamo Bay is not a free speech issue, it is a self-defense and nat'l security issue. It's also a legal wrangle, because those captured were intentionally breaking Geneva Convention rules (mandating uniforms, identification as military, and only attacking military), and therefore aren't entitled to such rights.

Free speech is a right guaranteed by the Constitution. "I may disagree with what you said but I will defend to the death your right to say it." --Voltaire

Reparations have little to do with free speech, so I'm confused by your connection.

In 1994 Florida paid $2.1 million to descendants of the African-American victims of the 1923 Rosewood massacre. The Tulsa Race Riot Commission recommended that reparations be paid to the survivors of the 1921 race riot in that city, in which as many as 300 African-Americans were killed. The issue is relevant for other groups as well. The 1988 Civil Liberties Act, for example, paid $20,000 to each Japanese-American who was incarcerated during World War II. State and federal courts and mediators are dealing with hundreds of Native American land claims, and indigenous tribes in the U.S. and Canada have filed suits demanding reparations for various crimes, such as the abuse of students in parochial and government-run schools.

Because speech is not the same thing as enslaving people or murder. Free Speech is not the same thing as speech inciting dangerous behavior (yelling "Fire" in a theater when there is no fire, for instance) however.

And although you may hate hearing some things people say, once we start censoring some opinions, what is next? Outlawing speaking against our government? Outlawing religious expression?

free speech blanket policy. you have to accept some abuses to prevent treading on the rights of others. also with the idea, nobody can techinically say what is free and what is not in its pure form
