Anyone subscribe to TheAthletic.com?

Is it any good?  Is it worth subscribing?  How in depth is it's team specific coverage?  Can I get film breakdowns and reviews?  Advanced statistical analysis?  Or is it basically no different than another local paper's coverage?

And what about the general NFL?  Strong draft coverage?  Fantasy coverage?

Worth it if you’re actually into above average journalism. If you’re only going to read an article here and there then you’re better suited for just the free content elsewhere.

  • Full disclosure: I've met and talked with James Mirtle (who was their first hire as a writer) back when he was covering the NHL's Maple Leafs for the Globe and Mail here so I have an affinity for him (and have seen his idea grow exponentially) even if I don't agree with all of his opinions.

I was a subscriber but let it expire because I don't really have time to read it.  Their hockey coverage is outstanding.  It's actual writing (they didn't "pivot to video" like many outlets did).  Their hockey analytics coverage is very good (a million times better than our local papers) and their draft coverage for hockey has generally been quite good (they have a fairly solid stable of hockey writers (Pierre Lebrun and Eric Duhatsek are as good as it gets)).

Here in Toronto my options are the Toronto Sun (Steve Simmons is a failure in everything and should be fired today for violating the medical privacy of Auston Matthews), the Star (hot garbage), and the Globe and Mail (decent business section but their sports section is not good at best).

Suggestion: See what writers they have who cover the NFL (I can't tell you who's a good NFL writer because I'd literally rather watch paint dry than have to watch an NFL game); if you're piqued then they will typically offer a trial period.
