Why is fun the only socially permissible emotion?
Any substantive interaction is actively shut down.

Because expressed feelings are contagious, and I - like everyone else - like to be contaminated with fun or something joyful, rather than anything else, which might make me feel worse..
Yes what you stated might lead into rejection and alienation at times, but it's only because not all people can handle sadness or bitterness, maybe they'd already be having them, and not accepting them deep within, or hiding them, so when you expressing such or similar emotions, you'll provoke their inner worries or buried emotions, and that's when they'll try to push you away or run..
But not all people are like that, the more mature the person is, the more they'd be able to accept and see through these feelings, because they'd already accepted their own feelings, and instead of shutting you down like everyone else, they might come closer and help, if your feelings were true and sincere, because some people do fake it to get attention or personal gain..

as the person before said- joy is the emotion and fun is what makes you happy - this deffo isn't the only socially permissible emotion.. Anger, jealousy, hatred, nostalgia and many more - no one says they're not permissible ...? Can't be helped can it.

because basically the way the world works is every body deals with their problems alone, and when they interact with others, only the show the good side of themselves, the surface, because they worry that people will judge them. What they don't know is everyone has problems, so if we all stopped stigmatising everything and helped one another, things would be much better.
