Working in retail?

Always greet your customers (not right when they walk in but just after, give them some time to check the place out), don't hover over them but do talk to them once in a while. Always be doing some thing but keep track of where you're customers are going and ask if they need any help once in a while.

Ask open ended questions so that you can probe into what your customers may be looking and try to make suggestions.

Who are they buying for?

Where do they intend to use it / wear it?

What special event do they have planned to use it / wear it to?

You're not going to be a pro on your first day, some customers will be able to tell if you're a new person. Watch and learn from more experienced co workers. Ask them questions if you need help.
