Assuming you mean "before" in terms of time we currently experience, then "before" did not exist "before" the universe existed.
Your question is analogous to asking what is further north than the north pole.
If you mean some other axis of time than the one we experience, then there is no way to answer that question without direct experience or evidence of that axis. It's highly unlikely it would make much sense from our own temporal perspective, though there are some theories that postulate such imaginary time axes [1].
After the big bang or origin of the universe, energy would appear to be conserved, though general relativity throws a spanner or two into the works with respect to anything other than static spacetimes or asymptotically flat spacetimes [2]. This may leave a question mark over conservation laws during the extremely early universe and possibly also at a very large scale and time. Hopefully this makes things a little clearer than mud.

I would assume energy had to exist before the big bang. Matter as we understand it it in a way like frozen energy and was created as a result of the big bang.

Space it self it call dark matter .The matter was exist before big bang happen ed.State of the matter still it's unknown ,source of the matter it's unknown. The matter it's exist even in smaller distances of two nano particles .

Matter/energy has always existed. The answer to your question depends on your definition of universe. Do you mean planets and stars? Space and time? I for one count the singularity as being 'the universe' before the big bang.

Hello friend w, energy ever exists. It is beyond time and space. It is pure consciousness. If you realize your own self then you understand the whole dramatic performance. All the best

Depends on the theory. If this is simply the latest in many, many universes then yes. If multi-verse and many exist simultaneously, then yes again.

The bit about energy cant be "created or destroyed" is misleading
you can "borrow" it (so long as you "pay it back")
Ie - you start with zero energy
"borrow" some - so you now "owe" energy (and have -ve energy)
then you "pay it back" so now its back to zero again

space-time-matter continuum did not exist before it existed
