My male desexed cat won't stop meowing at the door?

My male cat was already desexed when I got him at around 6 - 7 months old and at a guess he would be near 2 years old now. We have recently moved into a new home about 2 and a half months ago, so I kept him inside for 2 weeks before letting him explore outside as he was already an outside cat. We don't have a cat door as we're renting the house so we let him out in the morning and bring him back in late afternoon so he all day to explore and use up his energy. I don't like the idea of letting him out at night because we won't hear him meowing to get back in if we're sleeping and he has just always been inside at night time to sleep, but recently he has been wanting to keep going outside at night. I have been trying to ignore him and just be careful when we go outside so he doesn't get out but sometimes he can be very quick. Tonight when he came in he started meowing at both doors to be let out, so I caved and let him out until 6.30 when he usually comes in at 4 or 5, but when he came in again he still started meowing at the doors. I tried ignoring him for hours but it didn't work. I have also tried telling him off a few times but it works for 5 minutes. He is a very stubborn cat ton tell off as he is a manx so his nature is more like a dog. Does anyone have any idea why he would be doing this and any tips on how to get him to stop?

Update:

I probably should add that he has only just started this tonight. He never used to do it. I've tried calling him away, putting him next to me and petting him, telling him no (which he does understand) But he's not interested. He just sits at the back door looking out meowing and won't move. He is not a very vocal cat. He only meows when he wants or needs something and he also has a litter box inside so he doesn't need to go to the bathroom.

My cat Thomas will call to me from the door but it doen't always means he wants to go out: he's trying to call my attention away from whatever I'm doing because he's feeling neglected. Quite often a cuddle and a short conversation will do the trick. Cats don't like being ignored is all.

Sometimes cats just meow. We have cats who will meow at the door all the time. Heck our cats meow at the door even when they don't want to go out.

Maybe you should think about providing some basic training for your cat. Teaching your cat to come or lie down will be very useful. This way, when your cat is meowing, you can just call him over to you, away from the door.
