Why would anyone in their right mind study Civil Engineering?
I've studied Civil Engineering and having completed my degree and having underachieved, I'm really thinking why did I go this path? I think I didn't do my research, but why would so many others go this pathway?
I mean in comparison to studying something like Finance, Management, Economics, IT, etc as a Civil Engineer you are walking around on sites wearing helmets, visibility jackets and wellies in all weather conditions, whether they are hot, cold, wet, snow...
While on the other hand the above mentioned courses mostly sit in their air conditioned offices wearing suits and looking all fancy and not having to worry about their safety or getting dirty etc.

If you do mostly sit in your air conditioned office wearing suits and looking all fancy and not having to worry about your safety or getting dirty, then you are not an engineer of any discipline. Engineers crave to see their designs and ideas come into the real world, and love to watch their impact on the environment.

Being outdoors, especially in the enchanting stuff called 'weather' in England, is good for the soul and for the sole. Your feet won't dry up and die. You'll get plenty of exercise walking up and down river banks as you try to locate the proper position for those pilings. You'll sweat blood as you watch beams being set into place by a crane that has started to wobble just a trifle too much. You'll be able to admire the poetry of William McGonagall ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_McGonagall )
Ahh, the great outdoors! Good for the health, the heath is. You'll outlive us all.

You will always have a steady job. You can do the work yourself when you are licensed. It is satisfying and rewarding and challenging job!
I am one and I love it!
