For ER nurses: What do you do if you're assigned a patient you know personally?
Do you pass off the patient? What if you're slammed and passing off the patient is a problem due to staff shortage? I'm trying to get an idea of general policy.
If you need an example: You walk out of a trauma case and your next patient is your former roommate, someone you still consider a (decently) close friend?

Well, what if? Not sure what you are looking for as an answer. If you can't be professional and feel uncomfortable, then you would talk to your charge nurse. In small areas, taking care of someone you know is pretty common. There is no set "policy" on this per se, it would be up to the institution for an over all policy and up to the daily charge for any thing done right at the instance. In any event, HIPPA and professionalism should be strictly followed.
