Why is it only when S American teams are winning, the US refer to them as "the Americas"?

When the US are out of the world cup suddenly they and S America are one. Why do people do that? Before hand they are the US and S America is S America. If the US is winning something they dont call themselves the Americas.

Same with Tennis when Andy Murray is winning he's British, when he's losing he's Scottish.
