What are your thoughts on this question regarding jury duty?

I was thinking the other day about jury duty, and this came across my mind...

The law states that all persons are required "by law" to appear for jury duty... if they do not, they can be arrested and or fined penalties for not appearing...

Now, let's get past the "civic duty" aspect and consider this... I understand the jury duty and why...

If you, do not want to serve, no matter the reason, you can be arrested and fined, to me that sounds a bit like coercion and blackmail... and that is, under the criminal code is illegal...so, basically I can be forced to do something, I'd prefer not to do, no matter the reason, and if I don't, then I go to jail and or pay a hefty fine!

Wow! Sounds like my civil rights mean nothing to the court, if they can legally force me to appear... however, they cannot force me to be a fair and impartial juror to the defendant under those circumstances...

Just something that I was thinking about the other day... opinions?

Obviously it's a different context if a court itself is summoning you to appear as a juror.

"Imminent Domain" is the same thing.

    When that happens...

    You have no say.

Just wear your Confederate Flag t-shirt to the jury selection to avoid it. (not applicable to southern states)

I just told them why waste my time when the bad guy will just get a slap on the wrist when it's over? They told me to stay home then...!

I've never heard of anyone being arrested, taken to jail, tried, imprisoned for bugging out of jury duty, have you?

Our system of 'justice' (well, we call it that) requires broad participation by the public. The jury system is one of our strongest and most important traditions to protect us from abusive government. We all benefit from this idea, as have our ancestors for about 800 years. The fact is that citizenship includes both rights and responsibilities. Compared to income tax and military conscription, jury duty is pretty mild. There are any number of ways to shirk the responsibility legally.

No the court can't force you to be a fair an impartial juror, just as they can't force you to vote wisely or to live a good example for your kids. Much of our civic duty can't be forced.

But think the argument: "Jury duty is mandatory therefore my civil rights means nothing" is seriously non sequitur. Some people think that if we have a president -they- didn't vote for then democracy is a bad idea. Or that if schools don't teach all kids THEIR religion it's because the govt. is pushing an alternative secular religion. These are all the same kind of argument!
