Amazon and Google deadslow in the morning?

I still have Windows XP. When I sign in at 8AM in the morning, the first Yahoo! email opens up fast. But then it takes minutes for the next email, or for that matter even the SPAM folder to open.

Typing an email is a disaster, hang-ups even between individual letters..

All the time the hard-drive makes noises.

WHAT is loading or being exchanged between my PC and Yahoo?

(Note, two hours later or at night, everything is back to normal.)

Update:

I am most aware of XP with Firefox (vs. IE) being VERY slow. My internet speed (COMCAST) may contribute.

But, my real questions are: WHAT information exactly is being exchanged?

WHAT is it (possibly) that both GOOGLE and Yahoo! are reading from my PC?

Are they reading my browsing history and my purchases?

Please note this is only ONCE every new day, that the HDD is so active!

Update 2:

to Bruce:

Firefox is using 98% of the CPU activity.

Unfortunately I activated the most recent update. This is a known issue. Still the question, why every morning with the first switch-on all this activity?

If your hard drive is making noises, I would be slightly concerned. It may be a virus if your computer is struggling to perform simple tasks such as opening/sending/reading/receiving emails. I'm not entirely sure about Windows XP, but in Windows 7 you can open the 'task manager', go to 'Performance' then click on 'Resource Monitor' down the bottom. This will show you what programs/tasks are using all of your computer's resources (cpu usage, memory usage etc). If you have virus protection, make sure to run a full system scan to make sure you don't have any viruses.

Also, your bandwidth quota may have been reached, meaning you no longer run with unthrottled internet speed. I suggest logging into your ISP's website and checking your usage, and while your at it (if you use an email address supplied by your ISP), checking your email account online through your ISP's website to make sure you haven't capped your inbox. If it's very full with old emails, I suggest deleting some to free up some capacity.

Also, it may be that your computer is generally slow. Make sure to defragment your hard drive every month as a rule of thumb. It is found in the start menu under accessories. Consider upgrading your computer with newer components, or purchasing a newer model. Computer technicians at your local PC repair shop will be able to backup all your data and transfer it over to a new pc if you choose to take this path. I hope this helps.

EDIT: Yahoo! is checking its mailing server for any new emails that they can send to your inbox, which usually only takes 10 seconds maximum for regular computers one you click 'send and receive' or 'sync' etc. As I stated above, if you check your emails in the morning like I do, and your hdd is humming quite loudly, I suggest running a virus scan first and foremost. It is quite normal for your computer to run slower upon booting, but this should subside after a few minutes after booting up.

Google won't check your browsing history or your purchases per se, but they will use what's known as 'cookies' to modify its searches to give you a more individualistic response. For example, if you recently purchased a new tv, or were googling new televisions, you may find advertisements about tv's when you search the web. You can easily delete cookies through your internet browser under the 'history' tab if you feel inclined to remove them.

There could be a rogue program on start up. What I would do is download these two programs because, I know, they have definitely increased the speed of my computer. The first one is Malwarebytes. This program is awesome for taking out any rogue programs you may not know your system has. The next program is called Glary Utilities. Both free btw. For Glary utilities, you would just need to download it and fix everything first, so check the registry, erase tracker, and erase temporary internet files. When you keep using the program, it will then depend on what you want to do with it. I always erase tracker and temporary internet files and the computer of my computer improves dramatically; even more so, my internet speed. Give it a try.
