How do I keep my cat inside? If it helps to know his breed he's a Manx cross Domestic.?

I've noticed he has a very adventurous spirit to put it lightly. When I first got him, I wanted him to be an inside cat as I don't like outside cats. There's too much to worry about like if the neighbors bait him, if he gets run over, stolen, or picked up by the pound. Not to mention it's cleaner. But at some point he started really wanting to go outside. He'd wait by the back door until someone was going outside and then bolt. He's extremely fast, no one can catch him but he seemed ok with the backyard so I let it go eventually (once he learnt how to use the doggy door there was no stopping him because we have a dog and it's always open). Then he found a gap under the fence and how to get over fences so now there really is no way of keeping him in.

Lately he hasn't been eating any of the food I put down for him and he doesn't come home very often. He used to come home every night and sleep on my bed or the couch. I think someone else is feeding him and letting him into their home and I know it may very well be an elderly person and I sound mean in saying this, but he's my pet and I really don't like the idea of anyone else feeding him or letting him sleep on their bed (call me a jealous owner). I was considering buying a pet collar with a video camera attached to find who it is so I can ask them nicely to stop but the other alternative is to try to keep him inside but I have a feeling that won't be easy as he is now an outside cat.

Any ideas on how I can keep him indoors?

Update:

1. He is neutered. 2. He has a large cat condo with toys. 3. I live with my mother and her boyfriend who go outside every 5 minutes to smoke and the door usually gets left open by them. 4. No rude answers please.

But thank you, I'll definitely try the squirty bottle

I would not like it either. That being said, cats attach them selves to who they choose. Unlike dogs who basically go to and are friendly to all.

You maybe want to find out who the person is that maybe letting him in and speak to them,as you apparently have not been doing something that this cat needs and wants.

Manx cats are indeed a spry as well playful adventurous cats. You need to make sure more so that you have

things that occupy him,and he will enjoy, cat trees, toys, treats, attention, play with him,and of coarse make him feel much loved.

You did not say weather he is nuetered or not. If not, there you have it,he may have found a female and is mating. You can in fact loose your cat through this,in the wandering, running across streets, and through disease or illness in the doing. Now that he has started going out to break this cycle will be hard, and will

take patience on your part and as I said, things indoors that keep him happy, one good solution,in this if possible,is another kitten,a female,so he is still # 1,do spay & neuter here, unless you want kittens of coarse. This will make him happy to have a companion, and should change the whole dynamics here,as he as well may have been lonely, bored this will change all this. Good luck. I am sure if you do all these things, well, all will be okay. Purrs ~*

If he's not neutered, get him done now. Second, breed or domestic doesn't matter - ALL cats can be taught to live inside - NO excuses.

You make the door a scary place to be around when he trys to go outside. All my cats were raised inside from birth and have no desire to go outside for any excuse.

You teach him NO, STAY or toss toys across the room away from the door - a few times of stopping him and keeping him away from the door and he won't run out. I don't understand why its so hard for people to teach their cats not to go outside - all my cats have been inside cats and trained. Its not that hard.

First get him neutered if he is not already. He will have less of a desire to roam. Next get rid of the doggie door, and get the dog used to going outside on a shedule. You cannot keep him in if the dog is free to come and go through the door. Then you just plain keep him in. Make the door unpleasant for him - shake a penny can or squirt him with water when he goes near. Pick him up prior to opening the door so he cannot go outside. Get him a tall piece of sturdy cat furniture - that will give him exercise and entertainment.

You are very lucky he's being fed and treated kindly - many people get sick of free roaming cats that crap in their flower beds, or hunt the birds they put feeders up for. These people either put poison out, or trap your cat and have it hauled off to the pound. Keep him in for your peace of mind and his own safety. One of these days he won't come back.

An animal will always want to be outside and they will seek any trick that let them do that.

I don't like to see de-clawed animals because they need their only defense when they are outside.:-)

shock collar. make the door the no cross line. scat mat. get rid of the doggy door, most "cat" burgalers are small, thats how they get in.
